My story

[p]Dear Family and Friends,[/p][p]As many of you know, I have been an active runner for many years and in the last eight years a regular marathon runner. On 29 September, assuming a successful training regime and no injuries (touch wood), I will be running the Berlin Marathon for the 8th consecutive year. [/p][p]And, for the first time ever, I will be running for a charity - and a charity that is very close to my heart: The Cameron Bespolka Trust. My nephew, Cameron, died tragically in an accident at the age of 16 and he has been fiercely missed ever since. He was such a special young boy. From an early age, he loved wildlife and was into anything related to nature. He then developed a special passion for birds and every time I was with him he blew me away with his knowledge of birds. He seemed to know the common and scientific name of virtually any bird. He was an active birder and would spend endless hours out in all weather in his “patch” looking for birds and keeping a detailed written and photographic record. For such a young boy, I was so impressed with his dedication and enthusiasm for the natural world.[/p][p]So, inspired by his ambition to encourage others to share his love of nature and birds, the Cameron Bespolka Trust was set up to create opportunities for young people to connect with the outdoors. Which is an especially important thing in this day and age with the addictive effect of electronic devices! The Trust's website is www.cameronbespolkatrust.com [/p][p]I am also setting up a challenge for myself: If I complete the marathon, I will match all donations made on behalf of my run up to $1,500. If I break 4 hours, I will match all donations up to $3,000. And if I make a new PB (for the non-runners, personal best) time of below 3 hours and 48 minutes, I will match donations up to $5,000. Now, your initial reaction might be that this would actually incentivize me to run slower, but anyone who knows me well, will know that it will have the opposite impact on me. I like a good challenge (which is why I am putting this commitment “on paper” now), and I am already working hard on my training. [/p][p]PS: Should you wish to contribute via another means, such as via the US and receive a US charitable tax deduction, please let me know and I can provide the details (and also track the donation so it can go towards my matching challenge). [/p]
