Team story

[p]As most of you will know, our marathon journey started last January when we gained places for the 2018 London marathon, raising money for Spinal Injuries association which was a charity Laura had personal ties with. Sadly, Laura’s Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last February and we decided to hang up our trainers until the following year to spend quality time with her and support her through her treatment. This year, we will be raising money for Saint Francis Hospice in Essex, who provided incredible support for Mum last year and will always hold a special place in our hearts, as well as the Spinal Injuries Association.[/p][p]*All donations from last year have carried over towards this year’s total. *[/p][p]Mum lost her 6 month battle with cancer on 31st July last year and spent her last month in Saint Francis Hospice in Essex. I spent at least 12 hours there each day for a month, ate all my meals there with Mum, carried out all of her personal care and assisted the amazing nurses in any way possible. There are no words to describe how special this place is. It became our home, the staff became our family and it will forever hold extremely special memories for myself and my Dad. As a family we cheered along to the world cup there, watched Wimbledon, held Mum a 65th birthday party and her friends bought afternoon tea to the ward. [/p][p]The hospice are only 27% funded by the NHS, meaning they need to raise £7.8m this year in voluntary donations in order to continue providing their services. Dad and I still visit the hospice regularly and try to help out in any way we can. One of my Mum’s nurses has also decided to run the London marathon this year and it has been great to share the journey with her. I cannot wait to represent this incredible charity and it means more knowing the care my Mum received was on the back of other people that hand also fundraised for the Hospice. [/p][p]https://www.sfh.org.uk/news/devoted-daughter-to-run-london-marathon-for-mum [/p][p]The Spinal Injuries Association help sufferers of all forms of spinal cord injuries by providing health, wellbeing and care services that improve lives and create awareness and representation for SCI people. They were very understanding of our situation last year and held our places for the marathon, and we would like to continue to raise money for this great cause.[/p][p]Training has been intense. We are over 12 weeks into our plan and both completed a 20 mile race on March 30th; Laura achieving her aim of sub 3.30 and Shaun running home to gain the silver medal overall. We have completed up to 5 training sessions every week, eaten a lot of pasta, become best friends with our foam rollers, avoided beer (largely) and covered over 250+ miles. We hope all our hard work pays off and we look forward to seeing as many friendly faces as possible on the day [/p][p] Thank you for your support.[/p][p] [/p]
