My story

[p]I began my 2019 making a new year’s resolution to challenge myself. I gave it some thought and decided since I couldn't run for a bus, I would do the most obvious thing (not!) – set myself the challenge of running the Edinburgh Half Marathon! …Yes I know I am insane but my motivation is to raise money for an amazing animal charity! I absolutely love animals and I have recently joined a fitting volunteer group which supports the charity, Compassion in World Farming (CIWF). This charity campaigns to put an end to the cruel practice of factory farming and promotes higher welfare standards for farmed animals. [/p][p] I have 3 main reasons for supporting this wonderful charity:[/p][p] I want to raise awareness of the animal cruelty that exists on factory farms! Factory farming involves cramming animals into tiny cages and baron crates in order to boost productivity. The animals often do not have access to outdoors and are denied their natural habitats. They are selectively bred which often leads to unnaturally fast growth which leaves them with even less space and inevitable injury and illness. This is unjust! Animals who are factory farmed are stressed, frustrated and bored and as the UN considers animals as sentient beings, they should be entitled to live their short lives in a higher welfare and more suitable environment. [/p][p] I want to do my bit for the environment! Did you know that the factory farming industry is one of the biggest causes of climate change? Vast amounts of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane is being released into our atmosphere because of this. Livestock farming accounts for 14.5% of our total global greenhouse gas emissions. This is more than the transport sector! Furthermore, poor sanitation and the huge amount of waste generated by factory farms is polluting our waters all over the world.[/p][p] I want to raise awareness of how factory farming poses a threat to our health! Antibiotics are fed to all animals on factory farms, whether they are sick or not, to offset the risks of developing diseases. These diseases are caused by animals being crammed into such a small spaces. This can be passed onto humans via the food supply and thus drives the development of drug resistant bacteria, leaving us susceptible to various illnesses, diseases and even death! Also, certain “zoonotic” diseases, which are diseases which can be passed from animals to humans such as swine flu or aviation flu are much more likely to become pandemics as a result of so many animals crammed together.[/p][p] I am very passionate about this cause and hope I am achieving my aim of raising awareness of the dangers and impact of factory farming. Together we can put an end to the cage age! [/p][p] [/p][p] Thank you for your support :)[/p][p] [/p][p] Laurie xx[/p][p] [/p]
