My story

[p]“It takes a village to raise a child” African proverb[/p][p]At All Saints Junior School in Fleet, we are we are immensely proud of the link we share with the community of Soma in The Gambia, West Africa - best known as our ‘Learning Through Friendship’ project in collaboration with Kaira Konko Scout Active Support. Together, we have helped to grow education, scouting and opportunities for the young people of Soma while also supporting sustainable community based projects. Each February half term, we lead a staff trip to The Gambia, always staying at Kaira Konko Scout Lodge, and during our week we engage in joint curriculum projects with the staff and children at Soma School – engaging with and addressing global issues together. [/p][p]As part of our annual trip, we also source a rural community project in need of support. Our next mission is to rebuild the teacher’s accommodation at Sitahuma School, a rural village school in need of much support. [/p][p]The mission statement at Sitahuma School is ‘to create an environment that would attract good teachers to assist pupils to acquire the relevant skills in a conducive teaching and learning environment that nurtures the joy of learning’. Such an inspiring mission and yet the school desperately struggles to recruit and retain teachers due to the incredibly poor living conditions on site. In The Gambia, teachers are placed in schools, often miles away from their families and the current facilities at Sitahuma make teaching and living very difficult for the staff who are sent there. Teachers in The Gambia have such an important role - helping to raise aspiration and striving to inspire the next generation to make an on-going difference to their local communities and wider nation. As you can imagine, with such uninhabitable accommodation, teacher morale is low and so we very much hope to improve their conditions through our fundraising project. New and improved teacher accommodation will wholeheartedly enable the school to fulfil its mission statement. [/p][p]This year, our Gambia 2019 joint project work has been themed around Goal 7 of the Sustainable Development Goals ‘Clean, Affordable Energy for All’ with links to our school motto ‘Let Your Light Shine’. Together, children from both schools have been exploring the power of solar energy whilst also considering how they might ‘be a light’ for others. “Ask yourself each day what you can do to let your light shine more brightly. Be a light sender”[/p][p]This year, alongside of our connecting classroom work in The Gambia, we had the great privilege of working alongside the community of Sitahuma to create a new library for their school. A safe and stimulating environment really does have the power to attract children into school and with the addition of solar lamps, use of this new library space can be extended into the evenings. This project has already helped raise the profile of the school, as captured in the words of Mr Baldeh, our link teacher in The Gambia:[/p][p]“2019 team have put a smile on lots of people within this period of time, and it will boost the performance of the schools and improve enrolments. Today Sitahuma can raise their heads at any given occasion to be proud of the ongoing development taking place; thanks to your intervention. Sitahuma was an isolated and neglected school where if a teacher was posted there he or she would rather resign than stay. But today I can attest to you that teachers will be lobbying for the school now. Thanks for your interventions”. [/p][p]The new library has created a study centre for the children and a place of comfort for the teachers in the evening – but, most importantly, it has brought hope for a brighter future. This project has seen the laying down of deep roots for future growth and development at Sitahuma and with new accommodation for the teachers, the school will undoubtedly go from strength to strength. As the words decorated in the new library encourage us, ‘Let your dreams take flight’. [/p][p]Your donation will make a long-lasting, sustainable difference - truly enabling the school and wider community to soar.[/p][p]Many thanks for your support,[/p][p]All Saints School[/p]
