My story

Welcome to my fundraising page for TEENAGE CANCER TRUST. The donations you give will go towards bettering the lives of those teenagers and young adults diagnosed with cancer.

On 31 July 2011 I will begin a challenge of a lifetime. I will be racing across the Atlantic Ocean against nine other yachts in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

When the starting gun goes off for the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race in July 2011 the fleet of ten sleek, stripped down 68-foot yachts will embark on a full circumnavigation of the globe. The race track is 40,000 miles long and it will take eleven months to complete the circumnavigation. The race is divided in to a series of eight legs and crews can decide how many of these to compete in.

There are 15 individual races, contained within eight legs, in total and, just like in Formula 1, points are awarded at the end of each race, building towards a championship total. It means that you can put a poor result behind you and head to the start of the next race with the possibility of gaining maximum points as you lead the field in.

The race route is firmly in place but details regarding many of the destination ports are still under negotiation. The adventure will start from the Southampton, UK in July 2011 and cross the Atlantic Ocean, the South Atlantic, the Southern Ocean, the Java and South China Seas plus the mighty Pacific. It will deliver two of the three great capes – Cape of Good Hope and Cape Leeuwin – and visit New Zealand for the first time in Clipper’s history.

With all boats identical and budgets equal, no one has a head start. It’s the ultimate long distance match race and the winners are those who keep their focus the longest. It’s a unique opportunity to experience a rare freedom and only the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race makes it possible.

I am competing in legs one and two on the yacht sponsored by WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE. You will easily recognise the yacht, as it has a bright pink livery!

Leg One: UK - Northern Europe - Rio de Janeiro 5,630 miles

Leg Two: Rio de Janeiro - South Africa 3,390 miles

Total Distance: 9,020 miles

The crew members of each yacht will be pitting themselves against all the elements have to throw at us. It will be a mixture of long, tactical ocean races lasting many weeks, where endurance is tested to the limit and short, technical sprints. Weather will range from virtually flat calms to raging seas and storm force winds, enough to test the mettle of even the bravest of us.

Who will raise the prestigous Clipper trophy aloft at the end of the adventure?

VISIT www.leoniesutherland.weebly.com FOR MORE INFORMATION!

Events diary:

27 March - 3 April 2010 Level One Practical and Theory COMPLETED

7-14 August 2010 Level Two Practical and Theory COMPLETED

15 January 2011 London Boat Show, Crew DebriefingCOMPLETED

2-7 February 2011 Level Three PracticalCOMPLETED

23-27 April 2011 Level Three TheoryCOMPLETED

30 April 2011 Crew Allocation DayCOMPLETED

18-23 June 2011 Level Four PracticalCOMPLETED

I HAVE NOW SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE RACE!!
