My story

[p]So a new year…..and a new challenge![/p][p]Ending 2017 on a high, after achieving Personal Best times in all five distances (5km, 5 mile, 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon), I thought what could I aim for next year? So I am undertaking 12 half marathons in 12 months! [/p][p]The final list of Half Marathons I am undertaking is[/p][p]Sun 21 Jan Farnborough [/p][p]Sun 18 Feb Wokingham [/p][p]Sun 25 Mar London Landmarks [/p][p]Sun 15 April Great Welsh (Llanelli) [/p][p]Sun 27 May Edinburgh [/p][p]Sun 24 June Swansea [/p][p]Sun 8 July Two Tunnels (Bath) [/p][p]Sun 26 Aug Severn Bridge [/p][p]Sat 15 Sept Stockholm [/p][p]Sun 7 Oct Salisbury [/p][p]Sat 17 Nov Windsor & Eton [/p][p]Sat 8 Dec Lanzarote [/p][p]And, as I have never done so before, it is a new challenge for me and one which will require support. I therefore thought ‘why don’t I ensure that I remain encouraged and enthusiastic about the challenge through asking people to sponsor me?’ and in turn help one of the charities closest to my heart, the Family Holiday Association (FHA).[/p][p]UPDATE 20.01.18 One more day to go until first of the 12! 12 degrees and heavy rain forecast.....[/p][p]UPDATE 21.01.18 So I finished the half marathon! That is despite the temperature being 1 degree and snow blizzards the whole way around! The hill at 4mile and especially 12mile proved challenging to the pace but am pleased to say I finished in 1:51:13[/p][p]For those of you who understand or are interested in stats, here's mine from Farnborough:[/p][p]15/113 age category (not bad for an old bird!)[/p][p]118/631 female [/p][p]670/1608 overall[/p][p]Av pace 8:29mm[/p][p]Next one is Sun 18 Feb in Wokingham[/p][p]UPDATE 18.02.18 So I finished the second of the twelve half marathons for 2018! My time was 1:51:46, so slightly slower than Farnborough. I could blame the first outing of my new trainers. Or the fact that there was an early start to get to race. Or the fact that someone ate the last banana last night ha ha! However as runners we don’t blame anything or anyone. Every race is different, I gave it my best and am happy with my time [/p][p]My stats:[/p][p]71/198 age category [/p][p]220/615 female [/p][p]1100/1864 overall [/p][p]Av pace 8:28mm [/p][p]Next one is London Landmarks on Sun 25 March[/p][p]UPDATE 30.03.18 So I finished the third of the twelve half marathons for 2018! My time was 1:53:07. As predicted (and guessed by some) the numbers of runners in front of me hampered my pace slightly. The start was not well organised and proved to be a bit of a ‘free for all’ which meant that we had to dodge a lot of slower runners. A lot of U-turns in course also meant had to put brakes on. Even so I am pleased with my performance today, and running with Sam, my Chippenham Harrier buddy, and having the FHA and Mark there to cheer me on at mile 3 and 12 really helped to motivate me. Great course with lots of dancers and singers which kept you occupied! For those of you who understand (or indeed are interested in race stats here are mine for today). I am amazed![/p][p] 53/862 age category (45-49)[/p][p] 495/5875 female [/p][p] 1993/9683 overall [/p][p] Av pace 8:38mm [/p][p] Next one is Sun 15 April in Llanelli (only 3 weeks away….gulp!)[/p][p]UPDATE 08.04.18 One week to go to number 4.....Great Welsh in Llanelli here I come! Only seems like yesterday I did London Landmarks! :-) At least there is a bit of a rest between #4 and #5 - 6 weeks. Can't wait! x[/p][p]UPDATE 15.04.18 So I have now finished the fourth of the twelve half marathons for 2018! That’s a plus, especially as it was pouring down and wind was against me from mile 5-10! Route was lovely though ……[/p][p]My time was 1:50:49 which I am really pleased with :-) [/p][p]Stats as usual are:[/p][p]6/51 age category (40-49 and I am towards the back!)[/p][p]29/186 female [/p][p]121/411 overall [/p][p]Av pace 8:27mm [/p][p]Next one is Sun 27 May in Edinburgh (yes! 6 weeks away). Will be in touch a week before to give you the gen and ask for your guesses! ?? x[/p][p]UPDATE 03.06.18 The fifth of the twelve half marathons for 2018 is complete! Nearly half way there ?? My time for the Edinburgh Half Marathon last Sunday was 1:49:16!! A Personal Best (PB) so I am over the moon! I absolutely loved the course (yes, it was flat), the support was fantastic and I now know that when it predicts 13 degs and sunny, in Edinburgh that means cold and foggy! ?? Race stats as usual are: 52/621 age category (female 45-49) 585/5490 female 2668/10534 overall Av pace 8:13mm Next one is Sun 24th June in Swansea (back on home territory!).[/p][p]UPDATE 14.06.18 Yippee! Have now achieved my £1200 target on Virgin Money! Raised £274.143 from a Dress Down Day and cake sale in Milford House (thanks to all my GWR colleagues who always come up trumps!). And £136 from a World Cup Sweepstake that one of my team organised - very, very grateful for considering the FHA as the charity to donate the proceeds to :-) With some 'cash in hand' donations I have now exceeded my VM target. Thank you all :-) x[/p][p]UPDATE 29.06.18 So Swansea is done & half way there! But it wasn’t without its dramas! A late decision to drive down Friday evening meant I packed quickly. And realised on race day that I forgot my number! So calm prep time lost and coupled with not feeling 100% all week and having to run in 22 degrees I knew I was not in for a good race. So no surprise I started to feel weary at 9 miles and then collapsed at the end! Taken by wheelchair to medical centre![/p][p]My time was 1:58:10 - my time in Lanzarote 2017 so indicative of my running capability in heat. Pleased with race stats though[/p][p] 62/472 age category (female 45-49)[/p][p] 385/2208 female [/p][p] 1809/4955 overall [/p][p] Av pace 9.07mm [/p][p] My July one is in two weeks ....Then 7 weeks off to recharge batteries. Yay![/p][p]UPDATE 27.07.18 Despite the extreme heat (28 degs) I finished the seventh of the 12 half marathons I have set out to complete in 2018 ?? With the temperature rising throughout the race, and being so soon after Swansea, I was a bit tentative but still ran at a comfortable pace thanks to another of my running buddies Lynda. [/p][p] My time was 2:03:35! My stats are really pleasing too….[/p][p] 7/55 age category (female 40-49)[/p][p] 27/160 female [/p][p] 114/392 overall [/p][p] Av pace 9.35mm [/p][p]My August race is not until Sun 26th August so a nice long rest from racing. Running over the old (first) Severn Bridge at beginning and end which is a great experience as have done this race a few times.[/p][p]Ok so I am out of your hair for a while ......have fun in the sun (but stay hydrated!) x [/p][p]UPDATE 09.09.18 Well that’s the eighth done ?? What dire conditions to run in though, particularly wet and windy on the bridge but wind seemed to calm down when we were running around and up and down the country lanes. Thanks to Paul for pacing me and not running off to get dry quicker! [/p][p]My time was 1:55:18 ??[/p][p]My stats are really pleasing too….[/p][p]31/100 age category (female 40-49)[/p][p]103/308 female [/p][p]572/1374 overall [/p][p]Av pace 8.43mm [/p][p]My September race is on Sat 15th September. In Stockholm and running with my brother! ?? Can't wait![/p][p]UPDATE 06.10.18 I was quite looking forward to a flat course in 12 degrees and showers. Actually Stockholm turned out to be undulating (too many ups and downs for my liking!), 18 degrees and bright sunshine! Loved it tho! [/p][p]My time was 1:55:30 ?? (My brother did really well too 1:29:57)[/p][p]My stats are really pleasing too….[/p][p]104/473 age category (female 45-49)[/p][p]895/3457 female [/p][p]Not known overall [/p][p]Av pace 8.45mm [/p][p]October race is tomorrow in Salisbury…It’s a Wiltshire League race so get to run with loads of my Chippenham Harriers.[/p][p][img][/img][/p][p]UPDATE 16.10.18 So Salisbury, race #10 of 12 has now been completed. I found it hard as it was hot (what’s new?!) and the third race in 6 weeks, however one of my running buddies, Emma (who is way faster than me) decided this morning that she was going to run with me to get me through it. And she so did as my time was 1:50:00! ?? I am over the moon especially when you look at my stats…[/p][p]31/130 age category (female 40-49 and I am way towards the back!)[/p][p]79/373 female [/p][p]365/914 overall [/p][p]Av pace 8.20mm [/p][p]So two races left….can't believe it! I now have 6 weeks until my November race. It is on Sat 17th Nov in Windsor & Eton (Dorney Lake) so enjoying a couple of weeks of nothing ??[/p][p]Many thanks again for your support. x[/p][p][br][/p][p]UPDATE 20.11.18 Number 11 done! It was a lovely day to run the Windsor & Eton Half, however the headwind on the down side of the lake caused me to drop pace (4 times x 1.5 miles). Even so my average pace was 8:26 min mile which I am pleased about as in the last month I had a cortisone injection in foot and had a stinking cold last week. [/p][p]Stats as usual are: [/p][p]11/25 age category (female 45-49) [/p][p]48/173 female [/p][p]244/505 overall [/p][p]Av pace 8.26mm [/p][p]So only one more to go! Lanzarote here we come 😊 The race is on Sat 8th Dec at 1000 x[/p][p]UPDATE 12.12.18 Saturday’s race in Lanzarote was really tough and emotional. It was much hotter than last year at 28 degrees and with the headwind I didn’t think I would finish. But Paul my running buddy stuck by me and made sure I ran the whole way and finished both the race and challenge in style… My official finishing time (chip time) has still not been finalised – the gun time was 2:02:42, however my watch states 2:02:11. Stats which are really pleasing are: Overall 396/911 Gender 100/368 Age Category 22/76 [/p][p] I am officially broken but with a smug smile on my face as I have completed the challenge! However, the main aim of doing this challenge was to raise as much as I could for the FHA, and give as many deserving families as I could a break to help rebuild their lives and smile again. To date I have just over £4,000 but have received a few more donations from people whilst I have been away and need to add on the money that has been pledged by others. My aim is to give a grand total on New Years Eve 😊 Thank you for your support-it's been invaluable x[/p][p]UPDATE 31.12.18 So, the last day of 2018 and officially the last day of my ‘12 in 12’ challenge. So today is when I can finally announce the amount that you have helped to raise for the Family Holiday Association…. (drum roll please….) The grand total is £4901.30!!! Absolutely amazing sum of money. Just shy of £5,000 but over double of my original target of £2400 so I am over the moon. Thanks to each one of you who have donated in one way or another. On behalf of the Family Holiday Association and the families who will get a chance to have a holiday and bond again as a family a great big THANK YOU! 😊 Happy New Year and here’s to a prosperous 2019.[/p][p] [/p]
