My story

[p]It is time. It is time to speak up, time to stop living in a world of self-doubt and shame. It is time to tell you my story.[/p][p]In April, I will be running just over twenty-six miles for a charity who helped save me from drowning in an unspoken world, a lonely dreadful place. In my final year of university my world stopped. I was brutally and horrifically sexually assaulted. For those who went to university with me and wondered why I wasn't in class or at lectures or why I stopped group work so abruptly, it wasn't out of laziness, it wasn't out of choice. I wasn't allowed to know if the men went to our uni. Who was being protected was it them or me? The justice system failed, and justice sadly never prevailed. In a split second my world went from fully functioning and easy to a world of sheer distrust. [/p][p]I have incredible support from family, friends, and Solace, who offered me the counselling I so desperately needed. In my final session I told my counsellor I dreamed of being able to have the strength and courage to run the marathon for them one day to help try and change the way rape is perceived. Now, I do. I am their sole runner, no pressure - eh, please dig deep and donate so more people like me have the support to move forward with their lives. It never stops hurting, we have invisible scars but it is time to talk about them, let's shame the shame.[/p]
