My story

[p]Mbuntu:The African philosophy that asks how a person can be happy when their neighbour is not[/p][p]This coming August myself and eight crazy friends have signed up to our biggest challenge yet, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro not only for the personal challenge, but more importantly for the aim of raising money for an incredible charity called “Tanzania Trust”. This charity aims to support and empower women in their community.[/p][p]Throughout my education and working life, I have been given countless opportunities to witness the detrimental impacts that the lack of support and guidance can have on those in vulnerable positions and only strengthened my understanding of the importance of education, equality and justice and how it can help.[/p][p]Women and girls are central pillars of their community in Tanzania and this is why they have the ability to be such powerful agents of change - whether that is improving education, decreasing hunger or generating income. In order to fulfil this potential, more needs to be done to provide women and girls with the same opportunities as men and boys, and to achieve this, there must be more equitable treatment of both genders - each according to their needs.[/p][p]As some of you know, I was lucky enough to have spent my formative years surrounded by strong and empowered women, in an environment which encourages independence. And so, I can only hope to be able to gift other women in a very vulnerable position, with the same level of support. Witnessing the difficulties others have been in has only strengthened my resolve to want to embark on such a challenge for such a worthwhile cause.[/p][p]Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is not something I take lightly, and whilst I have no doubt that this will challenge me both physically and mentally, it will be nothing compared to the battles that many of the poorest women are facing daily.[/p][p]We all have wonderful women in our lives whether this be family or friends, and can understand why this is such an important cause. I would be incredibly grateful for your support throughout this exciting journey![/p]
