My story

[p]I have entered the Hampton Court 1/2 marathon to raise money for two charities that are very personal to me; Cancer Research and Malaria No More.[/p][p]Cancer Research: 1 in 3 people are affected by cancer, it could even be 1 in 2. I thought we had got away with it until August this year when my wee sister, Louise, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next stage is surgery, and then they will assess the treatments to follow. I am amazed at how quickly the medical teams have set up a care programme for my sister after the cancer was identified. I have faith in the medical teams to treat and care for my sister as best they can and with the resources they have available. But I am also aware that research and understanding is the only way to fight this disease.[/p][p]Malaria No More: I lived in Malawi, Africa, and saw some of the pain and grief that can result from the death of someone, especially children, from one of the oldest disease known to mankind, Malaria. According to WHO there are over 219million cases of Malaria every year, and over 500,000 people die every year, mainly children under 5 years old and 90% of all cases are in Africa. I sometimes feel that because of geography this disease does not get the funds it really needs to fight it. Malaria No More is raising awareness to help eradicate this disease forever.[/p][p]I started running, like Forrest Gump, just over 12 months ago, a huge lifestyle change. I have run 5 and 10k for personal challenge but my sister's diagnosis made me look for something bigger.[/p][p]I am hopeful, we all need hope, that medical research into diseases such as malaria and cancers will lead to total eradication or controls that can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatments. [/p][p]I know I can do this for these charities, and I hope you will help me achieve my goal, after all its only just over 4 Parkruns! Every little does help.[/p][p][br][/p][p]As a wonderful extra I was able to donate some money to VSO on Registration for this run, this is the organisation that took me out to Malawi and really changed my life.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
