My story

[p]Thanks for visiting Jamie, Lena and Sam's fundraising page![/p][p][br][/p][p]Jamie's Story:[/p][p]In the summer of 2008, myself, my father and a couple of close family friends tackled the 127 mile Leeds/Liverpool canal in kayaks over 4 days, starting in Liverpool and making it to Leeds on the final day. In March 2008 just before my 16th birthday, my inspiring Mum Jeanette Ruth Sheard sadly passed away due to cancer, where prior to her passing, St Gemma’s Hospice cared for her. The staff at St Gemma’s were unconditionally supportive and showed genuine care not just for my mother, but also for our family. Without St Gemma’s it would have been an even harder time! As we believed so strongly in the service they provide, we wanted to help them continue providing this unrivalled support to other families in the area. Therefore the decision was made to take on the challenge of the Leeds/Liverpool canal in the summer of 2008 and raise funds to help with the running costs of the hospice.[/p][p] [/p][p]March 29th 2018, marks the 10 year anniversary of my mother’s passing, therefore to help recognise her legacy and reminisce on the amazing selfless person she was, I wanted to put myself through a gruelling charity challenge that would put me through some pain and make this sacrifice to show appreciation for the sacrifices her and my father made for us during mine and my sister’s (Becky Sheard) childhood. The idea of this time running the canal came to me a couple of years ago, and here I find myself looking at the distance on the map, knowing it will be a very painful long weekend! It's very special to be able to do this with my girlfriend Lena and my best friend Sam, as I'm sure there will be some emotional times during the trip for all of us, and will be something we will always remember.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Lena's Story[/p][p]This year marks 5 years since I lost my wonderful Dad to a rare type of cancer. Whilst it was an inexplicably difficult time for myself & my family, it was made that bit easier by the amazing support given to us by St Catherine’s Hospice, Lancashire, where my Dad was cared for in his final weeks. Ever since, it has been at the back of my mind to give something back to this amazing place, so in May I will be cycling from Liverpool to Leeds (127 miles) to raise money for St Catherine’s & to also commentate the life of Simon Hughes. The trip will be split over 4 days so that I will also be able to support Jamie as he runs (!) the 127 miles to mark his Mum’s 10 year anniversary & to raise money for St Gemma’s Hospice - we feel blessed to have the opportunity to together commemorate the lives of the people who meant the most to us.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Sam's Story[/p][p]Jamie approached me a few months ago and said he was running this ridiculous challenge. I said send me the link to the charity page and I'll give some money... After a couple of beers I offered to run with Jamie and here I am now! [/p][p][br][/p][p]I'm will be running for Alzheimer's Society UK. Alzheimer's Society UK is the only UK charity investing in research into dementia care, cause, cure and prevention. My Grandma suffers with Dementia and it's an awful disease of the brain. Before the illness, she was the friendliest, loveliest person you could ever wish to meet; she was and still is everyone's best friend. Hopefully by completing this ridiculous challenge I can raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Society. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Our goal is to help remember Jamie's Mum & Lena's Dad’s legacy and Sam’s Grandma’s illness. We will be running/cycling every day for 4 days, covering almost 32 miles each day, which equates to the length of 5 marathons over 4 days! Given the fact any of us haven't completed even 1 marathon, this will be a genuine challenge! We would also like to invite anyone who would like to join us on our journey, potentially joining us for a day, half a day, or even just 10 kilometers. This will really help pick us up throughout the journey and would mean a lot to us. If you’d like to do this then please get in touch and we can co-ordinate where you’d like to join us along the route![/p]
