My story

[p]Early this year I planned a walk with 22 Tees Businesswomen to raise money for My Sisters Place. This fantastic charity supports women aged 16 or over who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse. Sadly, due to Covid-19 and the restrictions instigated this had to be cancelled. [/p][p] [/p][p]However, we want to continue our plan in a way that’s physically possible during this lockdown and still raise money even more so for this charity as they are anticipating a huge increase in demand. We have therefore all agreed to set individual fitness goals to achieve on or before 16th May (our original day of the walk). Our goal is to raise at least £500 if possible. [/p][p] [/p][p]For My Sisters Place, Lockdown meant that, like businesses all over the world, had to pivot overnight. They are still open, but operating remotely. This has increased their overheads as they have needed to purchase equipment for this, but also, they have been faced with a huge shortfall in income as all fundraising events are postponed and the shop has had to close.[/p][p] [/p][p]Experience overseas has evidenced a massive increase in cases of domestic abuse with increases of at least 30% although the experience in Wuhan was 300%. In ‘normal’ times, the Cleveland Police area already had the second highest rate nationally and so they did not go into this emergency period in a strong position.[/p][p]Although they cannot meet face to face with clients they continue to ensure that protective orders are in place, safe accommodation can be found and where necessary properties are secured to keep women and children safe who are unable to leave. This means reaching out and ensuring that the local population knows about them – they are working hard to publicise their message and the importance of things like safety planning and contacting specialist services and the police safely when necessary.[/p][p]Today, they are working with 382 women, and this is set to increase exponentially when lockdown is over. Imagine being in lockdown with your abuser? These women are not safe at home.[/p][p] [/p][p]Thank you for your support and thank you for helping a small charity make a big difference to the lives of women and children affected by domestic abuse.’[/p]
