Team story

[p]In May 2017 we undertook to ride 300 miles from Long Crendon (near Oxford) to Paris averaging 100 miles a day in the saddle, to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the St David’s Hospice Care who support people with life threatening illnesses and their families. My twin brother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer last year and received palliative care from the amazing team at St David’s Hospice throughout his courageous battle with the disease. I have seen first hand the invaluable care and support they give to the patients and their families whatever time of day or night. Sadly Jeremy passed away just before Christmas and his passing has left a huge void in our lives.[/p][p]My daughter Milly has a rare spinal condition and as such we have been regular visitors to GOSH since her first surgery in 2014. Milly underwent further complex surgery at GOSH in September last year to replace her spinal growth rods. My two week stay in the HDU with Milly during her surgeries remains a humbling experience. Most of the children there have significantly more complex underlying conditions than Milly’s and many of whom will never get to go home. The devotion, care and professionalism of the staff at GOSH, despite the often challenging and distressing circumstances, still inspires me. [/p][p]Two further members of our team and their immediate families have been touched by cancer since we rode to Paris last year. As a result we have focused our fundraising this year on GOSH and cancer charities that offer support for patients and their families. Our ride this year will be significantly more poignant as a result.[/p][p]Thanks to your incredible generosity we raised over £28,000 for our charities last year. We embark again this year on the second leg of what we hope will be our 'circumnavigation of Europe by bicycle for charity'. We start in Paris on 2 May and aim to be in Bordeaux by 5 May, some 400 miles in 4 days. As a group we have once again funded and organised the challenge ourselves, so every penny you donate will go directly to our chosen charities. I do hope that you will be able to support us in our quest to help others. We have set up a team fundraising page at ‘Virgin Money Giving’ so please click on the link below should you wish to make a donation - [/p][p]https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/LongCrendonMAMILParistoBordeauxRide[/p][p]Your donations will make a difference - thank you[/p][p]Message from the Rt Hon John Bercow MP:[/p][p]“I am delighted to commend those taking part in this gruelling challenge for such a worthy cause. I hugely admire their efforts. I wish them the best of luck as they complete their journey”. Rt Hon John Bercow, MP for Buckingham[/p][p] [/p]
