My story

[p]My husband, Brian, and I will be taking part in this challenge to mark the 40th anniversary of my younger sister passing away from pneumonia and acute myeloid leukaemia in 1980. It's almost impossible to describe Cathy because she was just so full of life; she was incredibly cheeky and such good fun to have around; the two of us were best friends as well as sisters. We didn't have many fallings out but any spats we did have really didn't last very long at all and usually ended with one or both of us falling about laughing! Cathy had a really infectious laugh and we were always larking about together. She was very rarely ill so losing her, within 7 weeks of her first becoming ill when she was just 14 years old and I was 17, was a complete shock and the most horrendous and devastating experience of my life. Back then there was very little support when a child passed away, it never occurred to me (or Cathy) that she would actually die and nothing prepared either of us for that, so the incredible and tireless support which Childrens’ Hospice South West provides to sick children and their families greatly resonates with me - I actually went to college the day after Cathy died, wanting to ignore what had happened and go on as if it hadn't! Without going into detail this was very much the wrong thing to do, although it seemed right at the time! I'm sure things would have been very different if my family and I hadn't had to 'go it alone'. This challenge is also very personal to me in that cycling was a pastime Cathy and I spent hours of our childhood doing together, hurtling around Rock Park in Barnstaple most of the time! Brian and I hope that our challenge will raise awareness of the need to support not just sick children but also their siblings, not just whilst a brother or sister is sick but often for many years after that brother or sister has passed away; and raise much needed funds so the Hospice can go on providing such support. Training has started and we're very determined but this is an enormous challenge for us both, not least with fundraising! We have lots planned for the next year including pub quizzes, bingo, a children's teddy bear picnic & treasure hunt and we very much hope you will support us as best you can and 'come along for the ride'! Please also donate what you can to this, our fundraising page, we are very grateful for whatever support you can give. Many thanks. Lou x[/p]
