My story

[p]In July I will be participating in a 25km trek through the Brecon Beacons which will include ascending the peak of Pen Y Fan. Then in September I will be taking on the Great North Run in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the worlds largest half marathon. Both challenges will be in memory of my late father Andrew Berry 1949-2013 and all other victims and families of those affected by sepsis.[/p][p]In 2012 my dad suffered a stroke which left him with a brain injury for which he required specialist 24 hour care and as a result had to go and live in a brain injury unit. In June 2013, we received a call to say that dad hadn’t been well all night and was complaining of severe stomach pain. He was assessed by doctors and nursing staff, but unfortunately no one realised he was actually suffering from sepsis due to a UTI. Later that day when we arrived for our visit, an ambulance was called due to his deterioration, and one of the paramedics realised what was wrong. Dad was rushed to Birmingham Queen Elizabeth hospital but unfortunately it was too late and he passed away 3 hours later with us by his side.[/p][p]Whilst awareness of sepsis has increased in recent years, more work needs to be done as there are still too many otherwise healthy adults and children losing their lives to this serious complication.
