My story

[p]This one's for Glen... [/p][p]Glen entered my life in November 2017 when he got in touch through my website to do home-visit remedial massage with him. He had mentioned in the e-mail that he had a condition called Friedreich's Ataxia and so I would have to do the massage in his house as he was very limited in mobility. At this time, other than a little background reading, I didn't really know or understand what Friedreich's Ataxia was. [/p][p]Having spent more time with Glen and research on Ataxia UK’s website, I soon began to learn what Ataxia was and more specifically, Friedreich’s Ataxia and Glen’s story, as told to me by Glen himself. [/p][p]Glen was like any other boy, full of energy, keen footballer and cheeky chappy up until the age of 9 when he started falling over for no apparent reason and after numerous visits to various doctors, one doctor eventually mentioned it might be Friedreich’s Ataxia. And it was. Glen’s mobility and co-ordination deteriorated over time. He had such severe scoliosis that he had to have a rod put into his spine. And he was eventually confined to a wheelchair, his speech and sight both deteriorating too. He knew he wouldn’t live beyond 40 years old. Glen sadly left this world on 26th January 2019, aged 25. He developed a chest infection and eventually his heart had had enough.[/p][p]Ataxia is a degenerative neurological condition that gradually attacks, due to a gene mutation. There is no cure and no treatment. I worked with Glen as a massage therapist and yoga teacher- doing all I could to make Glen’s life a little more comfortable and enjoyable. We laughed and put the world to rights and I will miss him dearly. [/p][p]Ataxia UK say “Most people have never heard of ataxia. But those who have will never forget it.” That is so true. Glen left a huge hole in so many people’s lives, mine included. [/p][p]Glen truly was a friend, he made me laugh, he gave me advice, he was so caring and thoughtful and an absolute comedian. He didn’t let death scare him and he openly wrote about death in his blog under the pen name: Wheelchair Boy! He was a keen labour supporter, disability rights activist, Jeremy Corbyn fan and a big supporter of the NHS, as well as Arsenal football club! Such a character and did not lose his sense of humour even as his condition worsened. A true inspiration to all.[/p][p]When Glen’s death was announced to me, it turned my world upside down and I wanted to do something in honour of Glen and to help raise awareness of Ataxia, Friedreich’s Ataxia and raise funds for Ataxia UK to help those who’s lives are affected by ataxia.[/p][p]Ataxia UK are constantly working to find a cure or treatment for this life limiting, debilitating condition and I chose to climb to Everest Base Camp in honour of Glen and those also affected by ataxia. [/p][p]This one’s for you, Glen. [/p][p]I know you will be watching and I will walk my little legs off to get to the top for you! [/p][p][br][/p][p]For more information on Friedreich's Ataxia, please see link below: [/p][p]https://www.ataxia.org.uk/Handlers/Download.ashx?IDMF=e1e878aa-43f0-4ac4-b8c2-315dacbb5289[/p][p][br][/p]
