My story

[p]What?[/p][p]I am fundraising to help provide scholarships at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), one of the top research universities in the world. I need your help. [/p][p]Why?[/p][p]Everyone has the right to good quality education. Lack of funding should not be a reason not to access it. The challenge is bigger for students from low and middle income countries. I think we can do something to support this vision. [/p][p]My story [/p][p]In 2014, I graduated from LSHTM with an MSc on Public Health after migrating to the UK. While the experience was worth every sacrifice, it was not easy. [/p][p]As a self-funded international student, I went to school full time while trying to find creative ways to generate income to pay for my expenses in London. From seasonal working collecting urine samples to outreach work on HIV prevention. Those experiences enriched my personal and professional development, but prevented me from the full experience of living in London and being part of a world renowned university. [/p][p]With little time and money, I became a bit resentful. I could not join my classmates on group outings nor had the time to invest on many friendships. I even had to put aside one of my biggest passions, running. [/p][p]Life is different now. After university, I started working at Public Health England doing amazing things with amazing people. I finally have the time and resources to enjoy life in London and run again. [/p][p]I had the privilege to meet great people that helped me along the way. It is my time to help someone else. If there is a chance WE can help someone to have a better experience, I think WE should do it.[/p][p]Why running a marathon?[/p][p]Running has helped me improve my mental health as much as my physical health. I run when I am happy, sad, frustrated or depressed. I run to celebrate or to grief. More than a passion or a physical exercise, running has served me as an outlet for high emotions. [/p][p]Not being able to run was challenging for me, and those around me. Not exactly the most enjoyable person when I am cranky. [/p][p]Running a marathon is a physical and mental challenge that requires months of training. You can follow my training regime at www.instagram.com/lguerrac[/p][p]Why LSHTM?[/p][p]The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world leading centre for research and postgraduate education. Their courses are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the fields of public and global health and are recognised by employers around the world. But mostly, it has some of the most diverse group of students and highly skilled professors. That school is full of rock stars. https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/ [/p]
