My story

[p]My name is Lynne, I will be 65 in October, with several of the health challenges that can accompany aging. I am a fair weather weekend walker and I try to train up for an annual 45km overnight hike, but this is by far the biggest challenge to date and something that I have thought about doing for a while now.It has taken me 2 years to save up to cover all costs myself .I will be doing this compleatly alow which in its self is a huge challenge for me.[/p][p]My experience with Alzheimers began one fatal day when my lovely mum fell and broke her hip and ended up in hospital......... I knew she had been a bit forgetful but nothing prepared me for the doctors words. [/p][p]He told me that my mum had Alzheimers. He asked me where I was taking her when she was discharged, I answered "home where else", he placed his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes and said "you're mad, you don't have any idea what you're going to be up against".[/p][p]With those encouraging words ringing in my head I did just that and took her home.[/p][p]You see we lived in Mallorca and my mum didn't speak Spanish or Catalan so there was no way I could have ever considered any sort of care home even if we'd have had the funds.[/p][p]We embarked on a four and half year journey together that was to teach me many things.[/p][p]Mum passed away 6 years ago at home in my arms, she was 85.[/p][p]For my challenge I am going to walk the french route of the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James. I will start in France, in the village of St. Jean Pied de Port and the first part will be to cross the Pyrenees by Napoleon's route. This will commence my journey of approximately 831km (750km to Santiago and 82km to Finnisterre, translates to the "end of the world"). [/p][p]Alzheimer┬┤s Research UK is a charity very close to my heart as I feel that it is only through research we will defeat this terrible illness and prevent other families from going through this life changing heartbreak.[/p][p]I am aiming to complete my challenge in 5 weeks, wish me luck!![/p]
