Team story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to our chosen charity for this event School in a Bag. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on the charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for supporting this event organised by the Rotary Club of Skipton[/p][p][lt]br /[gt][span=text-decoration: underline;]Morecambe Bay Walk[/span][lt]br /[gt]The walk across Morecambe Bay is booked with the Queens Guide, Cedric Robinson, for Saturday 10th September 2016, and is open to all Rotarians, friends and family (you can become a friend by contacting us!).[lt]br /[gt]The walk will begin from the foreshore at Arnside at 11.15 prompt, and it is essential that participants are there in good time (15-30mins before is advised). We will travel in our own vehicles, but as parking is limited in Arnside it will be sensible to ‘car share’ as much as possible. You must allow plenty of time for travel, parking etc. You will have to return to Arnside by train from Kents Bank Station, near Grange Over Sands, at the end of the walk. As the walk is on Saturday I am advised that this is not a problem (normal hourly train service), check the train times on the appropriate website. The alternative is to park at the end of the walk, on the road near Kents Bank Station, and take the 10 minute train ride back to Arnside, again look at the timetable and decide which suits you best.[lt]br /[gt]Walkers must be aware of the following:-[lt]br /[gt]There can be up to 500 people on the walk as several organisations may be walking on the same day.[lt]br /[gt]The walk is guided by the Queens Guide and his assistants and so is safe to undertake.[lt]br /[gt]However, walkers must be fit enough to walk the distance and negotiate the channels and gullies etc. I would suggest that it is unwise to bring young children on the walk. There are at least two river channels to cross in flowing water, the walking is on sand, mud and shingle but is reasonably flat, the walk is between 9 and 10 mile in length and usually takes 4 to 4.5 hours.[lt]br /[gt]You may well get wet on the walk, and are advised to walk in shorts rather than long trousers, your footwear may be damaged by the salt water and mud, old trainers are considered suitable by the organisers. It is advisable to have a change of footwear and warm clothing for the end of the walk because depending on the weather you may be cold. Suitable waterproof clothing may be needed depending on the weather forecast, the weather is notoriously changeable in North West Lancashire.[lt]br /[gt]Sunscreen, water and food to eat ‘on the hoof’ will need to be carried for the walk.[lt]br /[gt]There are no toilets on the walk  (but lots of ‘natural facilities’) ![lt]br /[gt] Rescue facilities are available in Morecambe Bay, but will only be deployed in a true emergency situation.[lt]br /[gt]The cost to enter the event will be £10, which will go to Skipton Rotary Club International Funds. For children 16 years and under the cost is £5.  Cedric Robinson makes no charge but a may be appropriate to be prepared with a sensible tip at the end of the walk.[lt]br /[gt]Sponsorship –. This will be a fun event, but we do hope to raise money for the charity which we have chosen to support which will be ‘School in a Bag’ information on this is available on the SIAB website, several club members have seen presentations on this charity and feel that it is a project which we can support with confidence.[lt]br /[gt]If you would like to join us on the walk please  contact me by email at  ian.smith@skiptonrotary.org to sign up, or for further information. Lets make this a Fun Club Event ![/p]
