My story

[p]Hi All, [/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to read! It has been about 4 years since I last had cap in hand requesting peoples hard earned pennies, but I am truly hoping the amazing story behind this fundraising attempt shall raise awareness spreading the word on CMV action and the amazing work the charity accomplishes, but also encourage people to dig deep and donate to help them![/p][p]The Story[/p][p]My beautiful God-daughter Orla, first daughter of one of my closest friends Henry Head (a Tyser's broker for the insurance folk) and his wife Hannah, was born into the world on the 2nd July last year. Soon after it became apparent that Orla had contracted Cytomegalovirus or CMV, a devastating virus that can cause significant damage to babies in the womb leaving them with a multitude of disabilities. In the case of Orla she has been left deaf and with a degree of brain damage the full extent of which is still unknown but already Orla is showing significant delay being unable to sit up on her own. Clearly it is a very worrying time for Henry and Hannah.[/p][p]One of the scariest things about this situation is that neither the Heads, ourselves or any of our friends who have had children of their own had ever heard of, or been warned about CMV, how it’s contracted or the potential impact it can have on babies and in turn the families. The CMV Action charity () is a UK organization of parents and volunteers who have come together to raise public awareness of Congenital CMV and to campaign for better prevention measures within our health service. They are doing an amazing job whilst only running off about £12,000 a year!!! Henry and Hannah have started a mind blowing quest to not only raise money, but more importantly awareness for CMV and this is one of the areas where I felt I could perhaps offer an arm of support. Orla’s Ultra Project () has been designed by Henry & Hannah to raise awareness of CMV and funds for CMV Action – the only charity in the UK for CMV. Henry plans to run 4 of the toughest ultra-marathons in Europe (those of you who’ve met him know he’s not built for long distance!) over the next 2 years with his first being the La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Marathon on the 28th June. This event requires Henry to cover 120km (75 miles) with 5,800m (19,000ft) of ascent (and the same again down) in no more than 30 hours – and this he says is the easiest one by far![/p][p]Mindboggling facts of CMV – [/p][p] ~ CMV is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United Kingdom. [/p][p] ~ Over half of adults by age 40 have been infected with CMV but it shows as a sore throat, fatigue or a fever.[/p][p] ~ About 1 out of every 200 babies is born with congenital CMV and about 1 out of 5 of these babies will have birth defects or other long-term health problems. [/p][p] ~ Only about 10% of babies with congenital CMV infection have signs at birth.[/p][p] ~ CMV is passed through bodily fluids such as saliva, tears, breast milk, urine or blood.[/p][p] ~ Once CMV is in a person’s body, it stays there for life and can reactivate.[/p][p]The Challenge[/p][p]There are 2 parts here for me – [/p][p]Part 1 – Lavaredo Ultra, Cortina Trail Mountain Run – 48km[/p][p]On the 28th June I’ll be trying to complete the ‘kiddies’ version of the Lavaredo, known as the Cortina trail () which is 48km (compared to Henry’s 120km) up in the Dolomite mountains of Italy. There is 2,600 metres (about 8.5 times the height of the Shard) of climb in a time limit of 12 hours. Once Henry said he was competing in the Lavaredo event I knew I had to get involved. What’s he’s doing is a monumental task and I can’t wait to see him cross that finish line, albeit 18 hours after me so I may be a few beers down![/p][p]Part 2 – The Made Up Triathlon[/p][p]28th September - The idea of this event came from a discussion over a few beers. Other great mutual friends of ours took part in an organised 10km swimming event last year in Wales called the ‘Hurly Burly’. We worked out that if you complete the swim, jump on your bike for 60km’s you’d get yourself to the base of Mount Snowdon. Then you could run up and down it! And so the The Made Up Triathlon was born!!! We are still unsure anyone has done this before and one of the boys Matty 'The Brownstar' Brown has actually created a website All in all a 10km swim, 60km bike and 12km run up and down Snowden.[/p][p]You hopefully would have had Henry’s fundraising efforts come through to you already from another source and so may be thinking a double request for the same charity is a push. Please bear in mind that we are two different people pushing ourselves to raise for this one amazing cause. He is big, thin, with radioactive ginger hair and average chat, I’m shorter, plumpy, with dark hair and even worse chat……..however we are both committed to this amazing cause and doing Orla proud!! [/p][p]Join the CMV awareness revolution! [/p][p]Thank you all for taking the time to read x[/p][p]Alex/Smiler/Macca[/p][p]p.s For those of you in the insurance world that know them I have also roped in Ian ‘Tino’ Martin and David Duffus to run so if that gives you extra incentive to donate then please do. Being ex-Marines though I’m hoping they can carry me through it! [/p][p][br][/p]
