My story

[p]Manchester Community Choir had been due to hold a fundraising concert last October in aid of Stockport and District Samaritans but it had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. We hope it will go ahead when it is safe. In the meantime, we are using our second online video - of "We need each other now" to raise much needed funds for this vital charity. You can watch the video here: [/p][p][br][/p][p]Two of our long-standing members volunteer with Stockport Samaritans - Chrissie explains:[/p][p]"Samaritans give emotional support for people who are in distress. People contact us with all sorts of problems - family issues, bereavement, addiction and abuse. Often multiple problems overwhelm people. Some callers are suicidal. Anybody can contact us by phone or email. The service operates 24/7, it is FREE and it doesn’t not appear on the phone bill. It is confidential, not religious and non-judgemental.[/p][p]In the branch everybody is a volunteer and there are 100 of us taking turns on shifts and other duties. We undergo intensive training and it’s a great supportive team. We have to work from the branch office so that we have the support of a fellow volunteer. During the pandemic we have kept all the shifts open. When some volunteers were self-isolating, others who were on furlough took on additional shifts. We have not been able to take face-to-face callers.[/p][p]We are very proactive, doing outreach presentations in schools and colleges and going to events and festivals. We were disappointed to miss Stockport and Manchester Prides last year.[/p][p]We have to raise £20,000 every year to run the branch. Although we are volunteers we need to pay for the rent, the phones, internet, basic office costs and publicity. Our fundraising efforts have been curtailed due to the virus. We had arranged to do a bucket collection at Stockport County’s match last April. However, we have been innovative. We developed an online quiz. Mike (basses) is a support volunteer and has been very successful in writing bids for money.[/p][p]For the Samaritans helpline phone 116 123 or email To find out more or if you are interested in volunteering you can go to"[/p]
