My story

[p]As a helicopter pilot flying for both the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and also the Thames Valley Air Ambulance, I get to see on a daily basis the incredible work that these charities do for people who unexpectedly find themselves in a medical emergency and in need of urgent critical care.[/p][p]Available both day and night, 365 days a year, the Air Ambulance Critical Care teams are called out many times a day to attend to road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses and many other incidents. Highly skilled crews of doctors and paramedics can be at the scene of an incident within minutes, ready to deliver the same level of care that you would expect from a hospital emergency department. A full range of life-saving equipment is carried on board, including a blood transfusion kit, helping to save valuable seconds in the vital golden hour.[/p][p]The air ambulances receive no Government or National Lottery funding for routine operations, which can cost each charity in excess of £9,000 a day to maintain. It is only thanks to public generosity that the charities can keep these vital services operating and saving lives. Each individual donation no matter how small helps to achieve this aim, and the money raised through my fundraising challenge will be split 50:50 between the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance. [/p][p]The challenge I am tackling is to run 50 miles cross-country, starting on the morning of Saturday 9th June 2018 at the Thames Valley Air Ambulance airbase at RAF Benson and finishing sometime later that day at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance airbase at Thruxton Airfield. [/p][p]50 miles seems a suitably round number, and also happens to be not too far off my age in years, worryingly enough! The cross-country route avoids roads as much as possible and instead follows mostly footpaths and bridleways. It will tackle some difficult terrain across the North Wessex Downs and at the same time require a few navigation skills (without the usual assistance I have from a HEMS paramedic to help read the map)…if my sense of direction lets me down, the total distance run may be somewhat increased! The longest distance I’ve run before is a marathon, but that was several years ago, so this should prove to be a testing challenge…[/p][p]A view of the route can be seen here (and if you select the satellite view and zoom right in at the start and finish point you can see the purpose to which your donations will be put...) :[/p][p]https://drive.google.com/open?id=1arcGNpzge4Cdt6bUm216lXxUxiwBfnnX&usp=sharing[/p][p]I plan to set up an live online gps track during the run, so it will be possible to follow my progress as I go, plus someone can come and find me if I get lost.[/p][p]Thanks for your support, and if you happen to live along the route feel free to give me a wave and cold drink as I pass by![/p][p] [/p][p] [/p]
