My story

[p]2020 was a very tough year for all of us, Coronavirus, lockdowns etc. As a family, my husband Mark and three lovely little boys, were just like most of the public, adhering to working from home, home schooling and in general spending some lovely family time together. Hugo, a very robust and effervescent little boy, celebrated his 5th birthday in September 2020, and with that came his first time at primary school, so for him along with all of us it was an exciting time seeing him nervously walk into school.[/p][p]In what seemed like no time at all we arrived at half term and were really looking forward to the autumn/winter months ahead, when our world came to a dramatic halt. Hugo had suddenly begun to feel unwell and after a few days we were admitted into Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where we were given the devastating news that he had developed a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.[/p][p]Hugo’s very difficult and intensive journey began immediately and his treatment continues today. As anyone would imagine, it is exceptionally painful and difficult to discuss. Hugo has experienced so much in such a short space of time, more than any child should have to endure, but he has approached everything with an unimaginable courage, strength and sense of acceptance. Alongside Hugo, his older and younger brothers have been expected to adapt to a very different form of family life. We all look forward to the day that Hugo is able to ring the End of Treatment bell and can begin to return to our happy, carefree, adventurous little boy and brother.[/p][p]After everything we have witnessed and experienced as a family over the past few months, it has encouraged me to take on the difficult challenge of running the London Marathon for Cure Leukaemia. It is a daunting prospect but nothing as scary as the journey our brave little boy is enduring. [/p][p]As you can see from my page profile photo, I managed to run the Birmingham Half Marathon in 2014 for Cure Leukaemia but never imagined that I would be taking on a full Marathon with the journey my own family are on at the forefront of my mind, giving me the determination I will need. [/p][p]If you are able to support the charity and donate to my page, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you. ❤[/p][p]All funds raised from this page will be invested directly into the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) network which Cure Leukaemia began funding from January 2020. One of the centres is in Birmingham and is the heart of the TAP, as the team that co-ordinates the trials across the United Kingdom are based at the Centre for Clinical Haematology within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital campus. [/p][p]Cure Leukaemia has made a 3-year £3m commitment to invest in this network to fund specialist research nurses and clinical roles in 12 blood cancer centres across the United Kingdom allowing them to open and run clinical trials for pioneering treatments for the disease. [/p][p]Patients from a UK catchment area of over 20 million people will have access, as a result, to potentially life-saving treatments not currently available through standard care. Every penny donated will directly help save lives of patients across the UK and hasten global progress towards finding effective treatments for all forms of blood cancer.[/p]
