My story

[p]I have been a keen runner for several years now. Always for my own well-being and to keep the Dominos and Pinot at bay! But when my Dad cycled from London to Paris for the Topsy Foundation, it gave me the idea to run for something bigger than myself. What better cause than helping give hope to children whose lives are being blighted by the effect of AIDS/HIV and poverty? Supporting their mothers too, who want to help themselves through independent work.[/p][p]The effect of HIV/AIDS in Topsy's area in South Africa-Mpumalanga District, south of Johannesburg- bears particularly heavily on women and too often poverty engulfs them and their children in a short time.[/p][p]As a result of Topsy Foundation SA's work with others in the area, the stigma attached to people with HIV/AIDS has been tackled but not eradicated. Coping with poverty and unemployment is a daily battle and the combination of these factors leaves many vulnerable and orphaned children.[/p][p]This is where Topsy steps in-providing basic health screening for orphaned and vulnerable children, improving education in 24 pre-schools in the area, giving seed and expertise to for the vegetable gardens that individuals and the communities establish, providing fresh food for some 2000 people.[/p][p]So I'm running for children who want to imagine and dream a better future for themselves and are willing to work for it. And for women to be treated with compassion and develop hope rather than despair for themselves and their young. The least I can do is train hard and try to raise as much money as possible so please help by sponsoring me.[/p]
