[p]While being in lockdown I thought what's a small thing I can do right now to help someone? I wanted to offer my time and do something that would help and support the local community as well as the NHS care services. [/p][p]So last week I was excited to become one of many NHS COVID-19 vaccine volunteer team members. Here I help-out coordinate and ensure the safe and smooth running of vaccination services.[/p][p]In addition, I am also taking part in 21 day volunteering challenge to support fundraising efforts for the North London Cares (NLC) charity who are a community network of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out and helping one another in our rapidly changing city.[/p][p]North London Cares (NLC) is a community network of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out and helping one another in our rapidly changing city who aim to:[/p][p]Reduce loneliness and isolation amongst older people and young professionals alike;[/p][p]2. Improve the wellbeing, confidence, skills, resilience and power of all participants so they can navigate our rapidly changing world;[/p][p]3. Bring people together across social, generational, cultural, digital and attitudinal divides.[/p][p]NLC regular Social Clubs bring young professionals and older neighbours together to share time, while taking part in fun and interactive activities. From hip-hop dancing to cocktail making, all our activities spark conversation between neighbours, providing the opportunity for new connections and relationships and helping all participants to feel valued, vibrant and visible in their community. [/p][p]Meanwhile, NLC Love Your Neighbour programme brings younger and older neighbours together to share time and build relationships on a one-to-one basis.[/p][p]Lastly, NLC pro-active Outreach programme actively identifies potentially isolated older neighbours in our community who might benefit from participating in our activities. [/p][p]NLC model works. 73% of the older neighbours who regularly participate in North London Cares’ activities say that their isolation had reduced as a result of being part of our community network.[/p][p]And of NLC young professionals who regularly participate in our activities, 98% say they have a greater connection to the community.[/p][p]How you can help[/p][p]To a small charity like North London Cares, every donation makes a big difference as we hope to grow, develop and welcome more neighbours into the Cares Family. To give you an idea of how you could help:[/p][p]- £20 could help fund a Social Club, such as a flim night, games afternoon or arts and crafts session[/p][p]- £40 could help us match a volunteer with an older neighbour through our Love Your Neighbour scheme[/p][p]- £150 could help fund a very special event for our older neighbours, like a dance party.[/p][p]For more information on North London Cares, visit their website www.northlondoncares.org.uk or follow them on Twitter: @northLDNcares[/p]
