My story

[p]Hello - thanks for visiting and reading my page!![/p][p]On April 23rd I completed the 2017 London Marathon (in 4 hours 53 minutes and 12 seconds) for Heads Together – the Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.[/p][p]The aim of Heads Together is to help people feel more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing, eliminate the fear many have of admitting they may be struggling with their mental health and to have practical tools to support themselves, their friends and family.  In short Heads Together hope to eliminate the stigma attached to and change the whole conversation on mental health so that problems are addressed and resolved sooner rather than later.[/p][p]Best Beginnings is a partner charity of Heads Together and the charity for whom money I raise will be donated.  Our family have been involved with Best Beginnings since our triplets were born prematurely at 29 weeks six years ago.  Our experience in the NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Thomas’ Hospital – where our children received the most incredible care – was filmed and ultimately formed part of a DVD called Small Wonders.[/p][p]Small Wonders has since been used in promoting best practice amongst medical professionals who work in NICUs around the country as well as being distributed to expectant parents who have a high likelihood of their baby needing care in a NICU so that they might be more informed about what lies ahead than was the case for my wife Catrina and I.[/p][p]Best Beginnings wider aim is to help every child to have the best start in life.  Along with the work it has done for premature and sick babies through Small Wonders, it has also;[/p][ul][li]produced an amazing (and free) award-winning Baby Buddy app for parents and parents to be.  This was created with mums, midwives and doctors and, amongst other uses, gives instant advice and contacts for every conceivable situation as well as having the ability to take pictures and videos of special moments in both the pregnancy and early years stages.[/li][li]Worked to support and promote breastfeeding of young babies[/li][li]Most recently produced a set of films called Out of the Blue which aim to raise awareness and reduce stigma about perinatal mental health issues.[/li][/ul][p]Although I have been fortunate enough not to have suffered the mental health issues that affect many new parents, mental health has profoundly touched my family in other ways.[/p][p]I was therefore very honoured when Best Beginnings asked me if I would run for them as part of the wider Heads Together cause. Indeed I have felt the benefits to my own mental health and general outlook and happiness from completing the training that was necessary for me to be able to complete the 26.2 mile course on Sunday.[/p][p]I shall be maintaining a decent (albeit scaled back somewhat!) fitness programme now the marathon is over and, my wife permitting (as I have not been around so much these last several weeks/months!!), may even try another marathon at some stage in the next couple of years.[/p][p]In short, Best Beginnings is an amazing charity very close to my heart and like all charities is in need of as much money as possible for them to continue their invaluable work.  I hope you will be able to donate as much of your hard-earned cash to them through my London Marathon run as possible.[/p][p][/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
