My story

[p]My name is Lance Corporal Mark Harding of the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.[/p][p]The 28th May 2020 will mark the 10 year anniversary of being injured while on patrol in Afghanistan.[/p][p]My reconnaissance platoon was providing cover for an engineer unit when we suddenly came under fire from the Talaban. Most of the unit was injured including me, resulting in a gunshot through the neck by sniper fire. This left me paralysed from the neck down due to the bullet shattering my vertebrae and damaged the majority of my spinal cord. [/p][p]When I was transferred back to the UK I was told by numerous doctors and consultants that I would never be able to walk again. However, I was determined that this was not going to be the case and began a very long and painful course of rehabilitation and recovery. [/p][p]I am delighted to say that I am slowly - but surely - making progress since leaving Headley Court. Ive proved the consultants wrong as I can walk ( although very slowly). [/p][p]I can honestly say that without the care and support of the military staff at Headley Court and the NHS staff at James Cook Golden Jubilee spinal unit I wouldnt be in the privileged position I am today by being able to put one foot in front of the other.[/p][p]Due to the current situation that we are all facing at the moment due to Covid 19 I feel a compelling urge to "do my bit" (with your support and kind donations) and give something back and support the NHS staff who are tirelessly continuing to provide care to patients, day in day out this selfless commitment in fighting this really hits home to me, as like soldiers they are on the frontline.[/p][p]So, I'm setting a personal challenge to row the Atlantic ocean (well, from Wigton to Cape Cod) on my Kayakpro Dragonboat machine in my back garden to show my gratitude the NHS staff.[/p][p]I will be "going live" on my Facebook page each day so you can check in and see me..as I'm planning to row over 100 miles each day feel free to like, comment and share my videos to keep me going. [/p][p]Thank you so much [/p][p]Mark[/p][p]*This will also be in memory of my friends Rocco & Tagi [/p][p](Kingsman Ponipate Tagitaginimoce & Corporal Taniela Tolevu)*[/p]
