My story

[p]Update 13th September 2020: Thanks to everyone who helped me hit the fundraising target. It's done! 300 miles in training and finally the 13.1 miles of the Great North Run sadly along the lonely roads of Surrey instead of with 50,000 other mad people in Newcastle. It wasn't the same but at least I didn't have the long journey home.[/p][p]The race app played up a bit and seems to have added almost an extra mile so the timing is a bit unreliable. My official timing on the app was 1:48:59. Strava makes it more like 1:42:30 which I would be very pleased with. Either way its faster than I would have thought at the beginning of the year so I'm pretty pleased.[/p][p]Thanks again to everyone who has supported me.[/p][p]Mark[/p][p]--------------------------------------------------------------------------[/p][p]As I approach my 50th birthday my personal challenge for 2020 was to get fit and complete the Great North Run to raise money for NSPCC. Circumstances beyond my control mean the event won't be taking place this year and aside from my own disappointment that means millions of pounds won't be raised by those running for NSPCC and other charities.[/p][p]So I have decided to take part in the Great North Run Solo Challenge. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Great North Run and raise money for NSPCC , I will be aiming to complete 40 training runs in 78 days, accumulating 300 miles and completing the 13.1 miles of the virtual Great North Run on 13th September. [/p][p]As you may be aware lockdown has been challenging time for the NSPCC. [/p][p]Calls about domestic abuse are the highest on record following lockdown increase[/p][p]Every week since lockdown NSPCC Childline delivered over 2,000 counselling sessions with children concerned about their mental health and emotional wellbeing[/p][p]Child abuse could go unreported during lockdown despite increased risks[/p][p]And unfortunately the cancellation of major charity events is impacting their funding.[/p][p]So please donate what you can because:[/p][p]"Every childhood is worth fighting for"[/p][p]Thank you![/p][p]If you're worried about a child, even if you're unsure call the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000[/p][p]If you are 18 or under and need confidential advice or support, whatever your worry contact Childline on 0800 1111[/p][p]Find more about the NSPCC and Childline here[/p]
