My story

[p]Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.[/p][p]I am attempting to raise £9618. This amounts to £1 for every day my Brother Dave was alive. I rarely talk about him as I hate people feeling sorry for me. On 16/1/97 he killed himself. He was newly married , a Police Officer and about to become Godfather to his first Nephew. He was 26 years old. We never found out why, brave or selfish? How could we have prevented it? Why couldn’t he speak to us?[/p][p]I have been wrestling with these questions, amongst others for the past 21 years.[/p][p]This single event ripped the heart out of my family and As I turn 50 this year I am hoping that the challenges I’m undertaking for three worthy charities give me some closure and allow me to talk more openly about this personal tragedy and the wider plight of others who have faced or dealt with similar issues or personal catastrophe.[/p][p]I intend this to be my last year of Ironman racing, having originally become involved in triathlon whilst searching for distraction following his death. [/p][p] My intended Race Year is listed below[/p][p]There are a few Key Events in Bold type that are primary targets. There will be many more training/ event opportunities I hope to see you at![/p][p]Many of my Tri4Life and Merseytri friends will be sharing these and supporting me as they have over the years and I’m relishing the challenges ahead! Many thanks for your encouragement. The picture/ logos below represent the Teams, Clubs and equipment stockists that have and continue to prepare me for the trials to come - Thank you![/p][p] [/p][p]MAY [/p][p]Enduroman 3-2-1 swim/ Half Enduroman[/p][p]http://legendendurance-events.co.uk/enduroman-swim-321/[/p][p] [/p][p]Ironman Lanzarote[/p][p]http://eu.ironman.com/triathlon/events/emea/ironman/lanzarote.aspx#axzz539UIIDQP[/p][p]My fifth and final visit to this fantastic race[/p][p] [/p][p]JUNE[/p][p]Big Bala Swim[/p][p]http://loveswimrun.co.uk/thebigbalaswim/ A 10k swim across Bala lake and back[/p][p]Convergence Run[/p][p]http://www.convergence.run/ 24h Endurance running event [/p][p]24hour swim[/p][p]http://onehundredpercentswimming.co.uk/12-24-hour-swims/ Swim a mile an hour for 24 hours[/p][p][br][/p][p]Llanberis SwimRun[/p][p]http://loveswimrun.co.uk/love-swimrun-llanberis/ First attempt at a swimrun race- two man team[/p][p] [/p][p]JULY[/p][p]Great Wales 9k Swim[/p][p]http://loveswimrun.co.uk/thebigwelshswim/[/p][p] [/p][p]Ironman European Championships, Frankfurt[/p][p]http://eu.ironman.com/triathlon/events/emea/ironman/frankfurt.aspx#axzz539UIIDQP[/p][p]Fast (hopefully!) and iconic European Ironman race[/p][p] [/p][p]Tri4Life/ Team Rubicon BVI Challenge – The Tri4life team doing what we can to help the victims of last years devastating hurricanes (see Youtube video below) [/p][p]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdvphe9b1Bk&feature=youtu.be[/p][p][br][/p][p]AUGUST[/p][p]11/8/18 - Mersey Swim[/p][p]12/8/18 - Big Brutal Swim[/p][p]27/8/18 Enduroman Arch to Arc Solo[/p][p]http://www.enduroman.com[/p][p]In 2001, my early triathlon days I remember reading about Edgar Ette, an inspirational lunatic who had completed an 88 mile run from Marble Arch to Dover, swam the English channel (21 miles as the crow flies) and then biked 180 miles to The Arc de Triomphe in Paris. I have wondered if I could do this ever since and have been fortunate to be a member of two fantastic successful relay attempts in 2013 and 2017. This is the year I've finally plucked up the courage for a solo attempt at this ultimate triathlon![/p][p] [/p][p]OCTOBER[/p][p]Ironman World Championships,Kona, Hawaii[/p][p]http://eu.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/world-championship.aspx#/axzz539UIIDQP[/p][p]A bucket list race for any Ironman competitor, the place Ironman was born![/p][p] [/p][p]NOVEMBER[/p][p]Druid Challenge Ultra Run[/p][p]http://www.xnrg.co.uk/events/details/2018-the-druids-challenge.aspx[/p][p]Three day Ultra marathon[/p][p] [/p][p]I’m supporting the Samaritans and CALM for obvious reasons. Suicide is the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. 12 men a day take their own lives in the UK.[/p][p]Team Rubicon is a charity set up to unite the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams in the UK and worldwide. Most recently deploying to the British Virgin Islands in response to the devastating Hurricanes Irma and Katrina that hit in September.[/p][p]Many thanks for any donations you are able to make. Please feel free to share this link to any potential donors or sponsors. All donations go directly to the charities, I am funding the events myself.[/p][p]I appreciate you reading this far[/p][p]Have a happy, healthy 2018[/p][p] [/p][p]Martin[/p]
