My story

[p]After more than twenty years of procrastination I've finally committed to running the London Marathon! It's something I always knew I'd want to do but it has always been too late to apply or I've not been ready. Not this time![/p][p]Having made my application for this year I'm proud to have been offered a place to run for Mencap (who incidentally are this year's Charity of the Year for the Marathon) and now have only three months to train and raise the minimum £2000 required to take part.[/p][p]Since starting an amazing new job last September which works closely with young people in a SEN school, I'm thrilled that this opportunity will give me the chance to focus and challenge myself to do something incredible while making such a big difference to others. It should inspire the pupils I teach to challenge themselves in different ways and is certainly going to help me fit back into some of the clothes I've missed wearing for a year or so![/p][p]Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life with almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spending less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday. They face barriers finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare. Mencap tackles these issues head on by providing support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence. Mencap also gives expert advice and information that empowers people and their families. They campaign relentlessly for changes that brings greater equality for people with a learning disability.[/p][p]By supporting me as part of Team Mencap to run this year's London Marathon you will be helping to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose and do the things they love. You can sponsor me through Virgin Money Giving, and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Mencap. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. [/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you so much for any donations![/p][p]Martin[/p]
