My story

[p]In order to raise awareness of EPILEPSY, Mary and Hamish are cycling across Costa Rica from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast. [/p][p]We are raising money for the charity Epilepsy Research UK and are grateful of any donation you make. All donations go to Epilepsy Research UK in full, we have paid our own travel and other expenses ourselves. Thank you. [/p][p]Here is a short message about epilepsy:[/p][p] [/p][p]Epilepsy is a common condition that effects the brain and causes frequent seizures (burst of electrical activity within the brain that temporarily affects its normal function). [/p][p] However, a lot is unknown about Epilepsy due to its wide ranging nature.[/p][p] [/p][p] One person in appx. every 103 people are effected by Epilepsy.[/p][p] Epilepsy can effect anyone and can start at any age.[/p][p] [/p][p] There are no visual symptoms of Epilepsy except for seizures - attempts are made to reduce the occurrence of seizures to improve the quality of life of the individual and those closest to them. Hence, seizure may not always be as frequent as you expect.[/p][p] [/p][p] Seizures take a wide variety of forms (and do not all involve collapsing and total loss of body control):[/p][p] [/p][p] losing awareness of your surroundings[/p][p]blankly staring into space[/p][p]becoming stiff[/p][p]strange sensations within your body[/p][p]uncontrollable jerking[/p][p]collapsing[/p][p] [/p][p] The reasons for the onset of epilepsy vary and are often unclear. For example, epilepsy can be genetic, or it can be caused by a brain infection, alcohol misuse, a brain injury, lack of oxygen at birth, a stroke..... [/p][p] [/p][p] Epilepsy Research UK fund research to better understand the condition to understand how to better treat and improve the lives of those with Epilepsy.[/p][p] If you would like to hear researchers explain their research into epilepsy, please watch the video linked here: [/p][p] https://youtu.be/fLrw95RygMw[/p]
