My story

[p]Hi! My name is Matt and I am running the 2019 London Marathon for Metabolic Support UK.[/p][p] The reason behind me running for Metabolic Support UK is a 14 year old boy, Louis. [/p][p] Louis’ story started just after his first birthday, when he didn’t wake up one morning. He was rushed to hospital where doctors struggled to wake him up and diagnose what was wrong with him. [/p][p] After much investigation, Louis was diagnosed with Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTC). This is a rare, lifelong metabolic disorder, where protein ends up being toxic in the body. [/p][p] Louis started a number of medications as well as a very low protein diet. There was no safe known cure for OTC, only transplantation. Which was too risky. Louis faced many obstacles along the way, causing him many admissions to hospital.[/p][p] In 2016, Louis family were offered the option of Liver transplantation. This was a very risky decision but would mean Louis may be able to experience life without OTC. In 2016 Louis went for transplant assessment and on the 27th July 2017 he was called for his liver transplant. [/p][p] Through his transplant and recovery, Louis kept up his reputation of being a difficult patient, experiencing complications which meant he temporarily ended up on the European emergency transplant list and underwent further major surgeries. After a long stay at Kings College Hospital, Louis was able to return home to recover fully. [/p][p] Just over a year later, Louis is back at school, eating a completely normal diet and on half the amount of tablets he took when he had OTC. On his ‘one year liver birthday’ he competed in the British transplant games, bringing home a gold medal![/p][p] Metabolic Support UK provide bespoke support to families, signposting the best experts and raising awareness of rare metabolic disorders like Louis.[/p][p] I look forward to running for such a great charity and hope I will be able to be half as tough as Louis has been, through my marathon training!![/p]
