My story

[p]Because of Stephen...[/p][p]Stephen Lawrence was a young black man with a promising future ahead of him in the field of architecture. He was a keen runner and was a member of the Cambridge harriers, where he competed alongside future team GB athletes.[/p][p]Just over 25 years ago, Stephens life was taken by a gang of racist thugs. The fall out from Stephens case and subsequent investigations into police corruption and institutional racism had a profound effect on British society. Changing the way our nation is policed. Stephens story, and the tireless campaigning of the Lawrence family has helped to introduce new laws to challenge legislation such as double jeopardy.[/p][p]In the decades since Stephens death the Stephen Lawrence Trust, set up to help young people achieve their dreams and aspirations, has helped hundreds of young people pursue college and careers in architecture & design.[/p][p]Last year (2018) the Prime Minister announced the first national Stephen Lawrence day, which is an annual event to be celebrated as part of the British calendar going forward.[/p][p]To mark the occasion the trust produced a teacher’s pack that was distributed to 27,000 schools across the UK (that’s every school in Britain) and partnered with the London Marathon to produce a mile marker in Stephens name, a new tradition to be repeated annually.[/p][p]About me[/p][p]My name is Mat Bickley Stephen was my younger cousin. We grew up together in South London and shared many of the same interests. In the months proceeding, Stephens death I worked alongside the family lawyer – Imran Kahn to set up the campaign for justice, and chaired meetings with special interest groups, the Metropolitan Police, and the home office.[/p][p]In recent years I have worked with the Stephen Lawrence trust as a marketing consultant, campaigner and ambassador, and helped put together the campaign for the first national Stephen Lawrence day 2019.[/p][p]I also consulted on and contributed to the BBC documentary – Stephen the Murder that changed a nation. An award-winning 3 part series that told the complete story of Stephens case, and his impact on our society over the last 25 years.[/p][p]In 2020 I am running the London Marathon in memory of Stephen, to raise funds and awareness for all the good work the Trust does for British youth, and in honor of Stephens legacy.[/p]
