My story

[p]On the 10th July 2020 Soph (aged 21) had a cardiac arrest whilst volunteering on a kids summer camp in Poland. She received successful CPR and shocks and was taken to hospital. There she had a further 2 cardiac arrests and has since spent weeks in ITU, the acute hospital setting and rehabilitation hospitals. During a cardiac arrest the oxygen supply to the brain is interrupted, this results in brain damage. We were originally told that Soph’s brain damage was not compatible with anything more than a vegetative state, however the months have gone by and she has continued to defy the odds. She is now at home and whilst she has both physical and cognitive impairments she remains the kind, caring and extremely funny girl we know and love. [/p][p]On 18th September a group of us will be cycling the 40 miles from Farnham to Hayling Island in an effort to raise money for 2 causes we hope we can make a huge difference for.[/p][p]The first being Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). A large focus of this organisations work is providing cardiac screening (ECG and ECHO) for young adults aged 14-35. Currently this screening can only be done through the NHS if there has been a young sudden death or cardiac arrest in the family or if an individual has cardiac symptoms. Unfortunately many cardiac conditions that result in sudden cardiac death go undiagnosed. By screening and identifying these conditions we can stop other young people like Soph from having cardiac arrests that more commonly than not lead to death or life changing injuries.[/p][p]The second organisation we would like to donate to is the NHS Guildford Community Neuro Team. This is a small team providing Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy for those recovering from brain injury, and other neurological conditions. They are an invaluable part of Sophie’s rehabilitation helping her to improve her mobility, her speech and eventually increase her independence. The money raised will help them to buy new equipment and support with staff training. This will have a significant impact for the patients receiving neuro rehab like Soph in the local area.[/p]
