My story

[p]In honor of International Nurses Day, I'm launching this personal fundraising effort to help the amazing Weldmar Hospicecare Trust. My grandparents, Gene and June, and my Aunt Pam all received care at the end of their lives and I have witnessed first-hand the compassion and strength of health care workers in this extraordinary vocation. [/p][p]The goal is aspirational: It takes £18,000 pounds a day, or £12.50 a minute, to provide the varied and valuable services Weldmar Hospicecare offers for FREE to their patients and their families. In 'normal' times, much of the money comes from large public fundraising events and 26 charity shops and outlets. In the current climate, some fundraisers have been moved online but the shops and outlets are closed until further notice.[/p][p]I would LOVE to raise enough money to fund an entire day of operating costs. I understand that this is a massive goal, and in these times of pandemic-induced austerity it is a tall order to ask for donations at the moment. Please know that I will be thrilled with whatever amount is raised, no matter the level. [/p][p]Please find a few facts below, straight from the Weldmar Hospicecare website. If you have the time, I encourage you to visit the site and see for yourself what remarkable work this organisation does: https://www.weld-hospice.org.uk Thank you in advance for any small amount you can spare.[/p][p]With love and blessings,[/p][p]Melissa[/p][p]************************************************************************************************************************[/p][p]Our compassionate approach to end of life care supports patients and their families, medically and in other ways, in the community, in our hospice and at home. All our care is free and reliant on public donations.[/p][p]We employ nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers, and offer counselling services. We work in patients’ homes, our hospice and the community, supported by trained volunteers.[/p][p]Weldmar Hospicecare is an independent charity only working in Dorset. 21% of our funds is provided by the NHS – 79% of our funds are raised thanks to the support of our local community.[/p][p]Weldmar Hospicecare cares for patients with cancer and other progressive conditions, such as motor neurone disease, who require our specialist help.[/p][p]We aim to ensure all patients needing end of life care in Dorset have access to excellent services delivered when and where needed whether by Weldmar, or by others supported by us. We work alongside our colleagues in health and social care to ensure that we meet the individual needs of patients and their families.[/p][p]All services are provided free of charge.[/p][p]We seek to improve the quality of life for those people by bringing relief from pain and other distressing symptoms[/p][p]We provide in-patient care at our Inpatient Unit in Dorchester[/p][p]We help enable patients to live as actively as possible and enable the family to cope throughout the patient’s illness[/p][p]We provide day services at Trimar Hospice in Weymouth, Inpatient Unit in Dorchester, Westminster Memorial Hospital in Shaftesbury, and in Blandford and Bridport Community Hospitals[/p][p]Our services also include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chaplaincy, complementary therapy and creative arts, together with child and family support and bereavement care.[/p][p]Our Weldmar Community Nurses visit patients at home, in care homes and in community hospitals[/p][p]The NHS contribute 21% of our overall costs, leaving Weldmar needing to raise £18,000 per day to fund our free of charge services through fundraising and our chain of twenty charity shops and six outlets.[/p][p][br][/p]
