My story

[p]Hello, welcome to my fundraising page and thank you so much for visiting.[/p][p]I work for an amazing charity called Read Easy UK. Our vision is for all adults in the UK to have the literacy skills they need to fulfil their potential and live life to the full. Most of us take our ability to read for granted, but over 2.4 million adults in England alone struggle with this most basic requirement for everyday life.[/p][p]For adults who cannot read, the Coronavirus pandemic has left them feeling more isolated, and in need of our service, than ever before. Home-schooling children for several months was a big enough challenge for many parents with good literacy skills, but for those who cannot read their 7-year-old child’s story book, or understand communications from teachers, it proved impossible. Trying to keep on top of the ever-changing Government health guidance has also been beyond the capabilities of many.[/p][p]In some areas of the UK up to 10% of working age adults would not be able to:[/p][p]Write a short note to their family[/p][p]Fill in a form at the doctor’s surgery[/p][p]Read a bedtime story to their children[/p][p]Complete a job application form[/p][p]We need to open new local Read Easy groups across the country so we can provide more free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching for adults. And this is what your kind donations will go towards.[/p][p]You can find out more about Read Easy at[/p][p][br][/p][p]I started running again during the first UK lockdown. I’d run in the past and really loved it, but, having two small children and working meant I had little time (and far too many excuses) not to get back out there. Lockdown meant more time but also, I found that getting outside daily really helped my mental health. For the first time, I noticed the impact of exercise on my mood and started to look forward to running in the evening after putting the children to bed.[/p][p]The opportunity to run the London Marathon for Read Easy UK came up and I went for it thinking I’d start training properly early in 2021. Unfortunately, I went a bit too far too fast and in March started physio for severe knee pain which turned out to be overuse relating to my left IT band. I’m over that now, working through a few more niggles and following a more realistic training programme![/p][p]This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I knew I’d have to train, but wasn’t quite prepared, as a beginner, for the strain long-distance training can put on your body. As well as finding the time to fit everything in! But, Read Easy is such a fantastic charity to work for and I’m so happy to have the chance to do something that will help raise money which will go towards setting up new groups, supporting new Reading Coaches and ultimately reaching more adults who need support with learning to read.[/p][p]I’ll be at the starting line whatever it takes![/p][p]If you could sponsor me and support Read Easy UK I'd be so, so grateful. Anything you can give will genuinely make a difference.[/p]
