Team story

[p]Update[/p][p]After months of preparation and training, the team completed this challenge in some extremely tough and testing conditions! [/p][p]This was most certainly one of the toughest and physically enduring challenges I have ever embarked on in my lifetime. As expected, the weather was subpolar and trekking through the bitter cold was like spending five days in a deep freezer – everything froze over![/p][p]Collectively we have raised over £100,000 for the Dreams Come True charity which means that, on average, some 35-40 children will have their dreams come true, paid for via your sponsorship.[/p][p]A sterling effort by the team and, more importantly, by your personal sponsorship, which we most certainly do not take for granted, so thank you once again.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Arctic Circle, 100Km trek, Polar Temp -30oC[/p][p][/p][p]My motivation…[/p][p]I do love a challenge, but I also like for those challenges to result in something worthwhile, so when I was honoured this year to be chosen as President of the Micawber Construction Club, an industry networking group that does extraordinary things to raise money for worthy causes, I saw my opportunity.[/p][p]My first challenge was to choose a charity. I chose Dreams Come True – a children’s charity that enriches the lives of children and young people with serious and life-limiting illnesses and conditions. With two children of my own it is hard not to be moved by the work that they do and so it really was a bit of a no brainer to do something to help them.[/p][p][/p][p]The challenge ahead…[/p][p]Organised by Specialist Expedition Organisation, Breaking Strain, the opportunity came about for a real challenge. I was warned that it wasn’t for the faint hearted, so I roped in five Captains of Industry to make a team; walking through the Arctic Circle in minus 30 Degree weather (even colder in the evening), trekking 100km in 3 days, 12 hour walking days with us wearing snow shoes, pulling our equipment in a pulk, sleeping in a tent, all without the aid of huskies and snowmobiles. ‘Why are you putting yourself through this?’ I hear you ask. You can find the answer below. Let me introduce you to Naomi.[/p][p]About Naomi…[/p][p][/p][p]Naomi is 13 years old. She lives in Fernhurst in West Sussex with her parents and younger brother Oscar. At the end of 2014 she was diagnosed with leukaemia and has since undergone intensive treatment including a stem cell transplant. This required long periods of hospitalisation which Naomi, through courage and sheer determination, coped amazingly and inspiringly well with.[/p][p]Naomi wrote to Dreams Come True, saying “I’ve always dreamed of going to Hawaii, ever since I was little. Mum used to tell me stories of how spectacular it was. I'd like to take my brother Oscar because he bravely donated his bone marrow to me to save my life. If I go to Hawaii I'd like to see the stars at Mauna Loa, swim with dolphins, walk on top of the volcano and learn traditional Hawaiian dancing.”[/p][p]After reading this story, I felt an uncontrollable need to make this happen… so here I am setting myself the toughest challenge of my life. Please, please help me make Naomi’s dream come true, any donations will go such a long way to make all of this possible[/p][p]How you can help…[/p][p]If you would like to be a part of making Naomi’s dream come true, please donate anything you can afford and, if you are happy to, share our mission with your friends and family so that maybe they might be compelled to give a pound or two.[/p][p]Thanks for reading and wish us luck.
