My story

[p]My name is Michael Carding and for four years I have been a volunteer for the Shrewsbury Food Hub which is celebrating its 5th birthday in April. Before I retired, I was a secondary mathematics teacher, finishing my career with 18 years as headteacher of Bishop Heber High School in Malpas, Cheshire. Volunteering with the Food Hub recaptures for me a sense of community. Although Covid regulations mean we are unable to do things together we have plans to take on challenges to raise awareness, raise funds and have a bit of fun.[/p][p]I am Tower Captain at Holy Trinity Church in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury so I have chosen a challenge which combines my interests in bell ringing and mountain walking. I aim to climb 5000 steps up Shropshire towers (with a few out of County guest ascents). I will climb bell towers (like St Mary’s), church towers without bells (like Shrewsbury Abbey) and secular towers (like Lord Hill’s Column).[/p][p]I started climbing on Easter Day at St Eata’s near Attingham Park and will finish with iconic towers in Shrewsbury on Ascension Day, Thursday 13th May. 5000 steps is about the same as when I climbed Mount Kinabalu on Borneo. I hope it won’t be so sweaty! [/p][p]Here I am below with my trekking partner, Timothy Firebrace, at Everest base Camp in November 2019.[/p][p]UPDATE 28th APRIL 2021[/p][p]I have climbed 3600 steps so far in a mix of church towers (including the Abbey) and secular buildings (including the prison). I have appeared on the front page of the Shrewsbury Chronicle and done an interview with Radio Shropshire. I have £180 in my collecting box to add to my virgin page so am close to £1000. Thanks to everyone who has given me access or cash. Next week I am up north to Whitchurch and seven other towers. Onwards and upwards![/p]
