My story

[p]UPDATE: I can confirm that the night before the race, I changed my mind re the distance, despite only having run a maximum of 12 miles (once) in training, and [span=text-decoration: underline;]completed the FULL 26.2 MILE MARATHON[/span].  35 degree heat, high humidity, lots of hills (bringing a whole new meaning to "undulating"!) and 70% trail - apparently a pretty tough course![/p][p][/p][p]Thanks for visiting my fundraising page where I'm hoping to raise as much as I can for the charity [span=text-decoration: underline;]Street Child[/span], a wonderful organisation that does just what it's name says ... getting children off the streets in Sierra Leone![/p][p]I've been visiting the treadmill (very) sporadically for a little while now although some (ok, make that many) would probably agree that my time there is not really "running".  I prefer the term "interval training".  You know the thing ... walk, run, gasp frantically for air ... walk, run, turn into a boiled tomato ... then realising that yep, only 10 minutes have passed.  It's a matter of perception :D[/p][p]Then this challenge appeared on a Monday afternoon (4th Feb to be exact), so I toyed with the idea of the 5k distance, with my colleague Charlotte's words of "That'd be way cool" drowning out the bit where she said "but you'd have to do the half marathon at least" ... and in under 24 hours I'd not only called Street Child but signed on the dotted line. [/p][p]So which one am I doing?  [/p][p]That'd be the Half Marathon ... all 13.1 miles ... when the furthest I've run is 4.5km, coincidentally in the longest time I'd run without stopping, of 25 minutes.  OK it was 25:43 but who's going to quibble over a few seconds![/p][p]So now I have 12 weeks to not only be able to run longer than 25 minutes, but increase the distance by ... I'm not even going to think about the percentage, and do it in tropical heat. Which I'm also not going to think about just yet! Nor the lack of time available to train!  Sleep ... that may be slotted in somewhere... hopefully... [/p][p]And for those who have asked, yes I'm funding the trip myself (travel, innoculations and all that ...) which means that all monies raised go direct to Street Child... which is what all this is for... [/p][p]Raising money (and awareness) for [span=text-decoration: underline;]Street Child[/span] ... who do so so much work to help get children off the street in Sierra Leone.  Children who, in our world, wouldn't question where their food is coming from, wouldn't worry about the roof over their heads, wouldn't have to beg, borrow, steal or sell their bodies just to survive.[/p][p]So if you can, please help me raise money for [span=text-decoration: underline;]Street Child[/span], join me alongside the pain and tears, and hopefully triumph of the new journey I'm embarking upon and if you can, come join in too - anyone else fancy running a marathon?[/p][p]Many thanks[lt]br /[gt]Michelle[/p][p]SLM website: http://www.sierraleonemarathon.com/[/p]
