My story

[p]I am a recently retired clinical scientist who was based at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trusts and I will be 65 years old this year. Sadly dementia and brain disorders have featured in my family in recent times and as the population ages these will become more common. Research in to the causes of brain disease is therefore critically important - as a scientist I would say that wouldn't I? Yet it really is true. To celebrate my 65th year and to raise money for a very worthwhile cause (The Yorkshire Brain Research Centre - YBRC) from July 23rd to September 19th 2018 I decided to cycle solo and at my own expense across Canada from Vancouver to Montreal and possibly beyond if time allowed. In fact I not only made it to Montreal, but also on to Quebec and then on to a small village called Moisie, about 20 miles east of Sept-Iles on the northern shore of the Gulf of St Lawrence, thereby achieving my ultimate goal of riding coast to coast. I cycled back in to Quebec on 15th September having ridden 4,317 Miles. Some of you will remember that in 2015 I cycled solo from New York to San Francisco and raised just over £16,000 for the YBRC. This Canadian ride was a significantly bigger challenge not least because of the extreme heat, very busy roads at times, lack of services, etc. I realise that many of you were very generous in terms of your sponsorship in 2015 and may feel less inclined to be so generous again. However, for a variety of reasons e.g. the difficulties encountered, the worry it causes my family and travel insurance for long trips once 65 years old, this is likely to be my last long distance fundraising cycle ride so please sponsor me once again.[/p]
