My story

[p]Why am I doing this?[/p][p]It’s now been just over two years since my mum, Amanda Dickerson, tragically took her own life following several years suffering with mental illness.[/p][p]Whilst the last years of her life and the time since her passing have been incredibly difficult for our family, I want to use this time to remember the real Amanda. The one with such a great sense of humour and fun. The one who loved to bring so much energy to coaching athletics and watching any type of sport. And the one whose family meant the world to her.[/p][p]Therefore I am proud to be supporting Mind, the mental health charity, helping others so that they do not have to go through the same as our family.[/p][p]Mind also provides support for people that look after those dealing with mental health problems. I am therefore also supporting Mind to honour my dad, Andrew Dickerson, who cared for my mum throughout her illness and still does everything to look after Milly, Sam and myself.[/p][p]What am I doing?[/p][p]Over the next few weeks I’ll be doing a series of fundraising events to increase awareness of mental health and to hopefully raise some funds for Mind along the way.[/p][p]This will culminate in attempting to run two marathons, in two counties, in two weeks![/p][p]First, it will be the London Marathon on October 3rd.[/p][p]The second, well that is a story in itself![/p][p]Three years ago my dad was meant to run his final 6 star world major marathon in Tokyo, but my mum’s mental illness was too great to leave her at the time, so he gave his place away.[/p][p]He was then due to go back to Tokyo two years ago, the week after my mum took her own life, so a trip to Japan was simply out of the question.[/p][p]Then last year he finally managed to get to Tokyo, a mental battle in itself, just one year after the passing of my mum. However, the marathon ended up being cancelled due to COVID-19.[/p][p]This year again, after now training for it four times, we were hoping to run the Tokyo Marathon together but it has now been announced no international runners will be able to take part due to COVID-19.[/p][p]Instead, we will hopefully be running the Yorkshire Marathon together on October 17th, just two weeks after getting around London![/p][p]How can you make a difference?[/p][p]Whatever the size of your donation, it will make a huge difference in allowing Mind to provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.[/p][p]Their work campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. They won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.[/p][p]This is what your donation could do:[/p][p]£10 could allow Mind to send essential information booklets about mental health to 40 people.[/p][p]£40 could pay for 28 people to campaign for change on Mind’s behalf.[/p][p]£70 could keep the Mind online community, Elefriends, open and safe for two hours.[/p][p]£120 could offer a lifeline to eight people in desperate need of support from the Mind legal line.[/p][p]£200 could help keep the Mind Infoline open for 1 hour, helping 35 people.[/p][p]£300 could support a young person bereaved by suicide to access 1:1 and group support.[/p][p]£550 could provide five people struggling with their mental health a place in a 10-week wellbeing group with team sports and cookery.[/p][p]I will personally be covering the fees for all marathon entries, travel and any other costs, so 100% of the money raised will go to Mind. [/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to visit my page and for donating. Your support is hugely appreciated.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]

Saw your post through Georgie’s Facebook was touched by your story. Me and my family have been affected by mental health and it is something you tremendously take for granted when well. Love the cause, and hope it makes a difference. Well done.
