My story

[p]So how many of you these days know someone with a hearing aid....probably most of you or know someone who has had their hearing deteriorate. Statistics currently show there are currently 11 million people with hearing loss, which is around one in six of us as well and there are 50,000 children with hearing loss in the UK. Around half are born with hearing loss while the other half lose their hearing during childhood.[/p][p]Hearing loss can lead to withdrawal from social situations, emotional distress, and depression. Research shows that it increases the risk of loneliness, but only for those who don't wear hearing aids. [/p][p]Also hearing loss can increase the risk of dementia by up to five times, but evidence also suggests that hearing aids may reduce these risks.[/p][p]I’ve grown up in the Deaf Community and have been a trustee for the Ipswich Deaf Society since it was formed in 2014 and want to improve the premises we have for the Deaf Community.[/p][p]We want to make the centre somewhere that that the Deaf community can come to meet to socialise, get help & advice, so much is said about isolation and the impact on mental health that we want to be there to prevent that. [/p][p]The Ipswich Deaf Children Society also use the building and we want these children to have somewhere they can call a home in the future for both them and their families. [/p][p]We’ve already created a coffee area from fundraising and have started holding regular coffee mornings for people to meet. [/p][p]Our next aim is to refurbish other areas of the building so other events and projects can take place, like lunch clubs, classes teaching British Sign Language and hold workshops to help the Deaf community as well as hold Deaf Awareness sessions for companies. [/p][p]We want to be able to open the centre on a regular basis and hold other events.[/p][p]We rely on donations or money raised from the use of the building so too make the changes we want to make it’ll be reliant on fundraising and grants. [/p][p]The Deaf community are so important to those who are part of it, not only those who are Deaf themselves but their family and friends and we want to have somewhere for everyone to meet and call home. [/p][p][br][/p]
