Team story

[p]The Challenge [/p][p]On Saturday 9th May five of us will be cycling up the height of Mount Everest (and then a bit more) on our turbo trainers.[/p][p]We expect the 8,848m climb will entail 11 to 13 hours of continuous cycling as we summit the virtual ‘Alpe Du Zwift’ at least 9 times.[/p][p]This is in support of the Uganda Foundation in Masaka.[/p][p]The Foundation’s Uganda Marathon fundraising event has been postponed to May 2021, and their usual charitable activities suspended so they are in need of our support. All funds we raise will help the Foundation reach their goal of £25,000. [/p][p]Why We Need Your Help[/p][p]Uganda Marathon Emergency support: Save Medics, Feed Masaka.[/p][p]Uganda is currently in lockdown to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.[/p][p]There are only 55 intensive care beds in the entire country.[/p][p]Should the virus spread, the healthcare system will quickly become overwhelmed. [/p][p]To contain the spread, the Ugandan government has passed extremely strict laws on social distancing, curfews, the movement of people, and the closure of almost all businesses. Almost all vehicles are banned from the roads. Exercising in public is forbidden. [/p][p]These measures are necessary to prevent mass deaths. However, the Ugandan economy largely cash-based and the government welfare safety net is non-existent. [/p][p]Many Ugandans are now facing a long period of no income. Without work, they will soon be unable to feed their families.[/p][p]We are solely focusing our activities on supporting the local community in Masaka where we operate.[/p][p]In partnership with EcoBrix and other key supporters, we are funding key initiatives to save lives.[/p][p]Funding Masaka Hospital[/p][p]With a catchment area of over 1.5 million people, and just 330 beds, the main hospital in the region is vulnerable.[/p][p]You will be funding:[/p][p]Lifesaving PPE (gloves, masks, gowns) for doctors, nurses and healthcare staff, who are desperately under equipped[/p][p]Handwashing stations across the Hospital grounds and buildings for better prevention[/p][p]Isolation areas for patients with suspected Covid-19, so they don’t mix with general population[/p][p]Food program for Hospital workers so that they can eat when shops and markets are closed[/p][p]Feeding Masaka[/p][p]The cure must not be worse than the disease. With all schools - and school food programs - closed, families now have many more mouths to feed at home. Things are already tight, and it will get much worse.[/p][p]With closure of almost every business and market, families are unable to generate income. With no government safety net, many face starvation.[/p][p]You will be funding a program of seed distribution and home garden planting, so that families can plant quick-growing crops in time to harvest before their money and food stores runs out.[/p][p]Job support fund[/p][p]Many of the project organisers we have spent time with are facing extreme financial difficulty, it is unclear how they will pay their staff. You will also be funding emergency grants to support Ugandan charity workers - allowing them to continue to support their communities without worrying about how they will provide for their families[/p][p] [/p]
