My story

[p]Update: And now the Marathon is virtual on Sunday 4 October - it has got even harder!![/p][p]On Sunday 26 April, 2020 I am setting myself my biggest ever challenge to complete the Virgin London Marathon! I am running to raise money for a hugely worthwhile and important charity: The Childhood Cancer and Leukemia Group. A family I know recently lost their little boy, Ben aged just 7, to cancer and this just should not happen. And now, because I have a ballot place, the money I raise will go directly to Ben's Special Named Fund - raising money directly to support research in to Rhabdomyosarcoma. We are led to believe that childhood cancer is rare but the figures below tell a different story:[/p][p]Worldwide, 300 000 children (aged 0-19) are diagnosed with cancer every single year.[/p][p]Worldwide, 90 000 children (aged 0-19) die from cancer every single year. In June, Ben became one of these 90 000. His future stolen by this disease.[/p][p]In the UK alone, 12 children (aged 0-19) are diagnosed with cancer every single day. 365 days of the year. That's over 4000 children every year. Just in the UK...[/p][p]Breaking that down, 1 in every 500 children in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer before their 14th birthday. Let that sink in, 1 in 500 children will be diagnosed with cancer before their 14th birthday. There are 500 children in my school. [/p][p]Cancer Research, the largest charity in the UK, only use 1.4% of their funding on children's cancers. 1.4%? Do our children not matter?[/p][p]In recent years there have been hundreds of new chemotherapies developed for adults. This is amazing, cancer is a vile disease and thanks to research more adults with cancer are living longer. But do you know how many drugs have been developed specifically for children's cancers? 4. Just 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. And that's not just recently, that's EVER. This means that thousands of children have had to tolerate harsh drugs, some over 40 years old, that were designed for an adult body. Can you imagine the damage this does? There is 95% chance of children having a severe or life threatening illness later in life. Not from the cancer, but damage caused by the adult chemotherapies used to try and keep them alive. [/p][p]There is no known cause of childhood cancer. There is no possible way you can screen for it or prevent it. Religion, race, wealth, it's all irrelevant. Childhood cancer does not discriminate, it does not care and it doesn't only happen to other people. [/p][p]So that's why I'm doing this. We NEED to know more about childhood cancer. We NEED more research. We NEED more treatment options. We MUST help. [/p][p]You will be able to track my running journey on Twitter and Instagram. In the last year I've completed 6 half marathons, along with a few 10kms, but 26.2 miles is very different! Your likes, support and donations will help me put those trainers on![/p]
