My story

[p]I am a consultant anaesthetist based at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, involved in caring for COVID-19 patients in Theatres, and Critical care patients that were admitted to theatre recovery. [/p][p]On Saturday 2 May, I started to feel unwell with severe headache and body aches, hence I went into self-isolation. By Sunday 10 May, I deteriorated and developed shortness of breath. An ambulance was called, and I was admitted into the Critical Care Unit from A&E, as I was considered to be very poorly.[/p][p]I remained in the care of my colleagues in Critical Care until Sunday 24 May, requiring support for my breathing through ventilator & other specialised equipment. It was during this time I noticed that despite wearing uncomfortable, heat-retaining PPE, critical care staff continued to perform their duties and provided high-quality care to myself and the other patients. [/p][p]Initially, I was very weak and unable to perform even simple tasks. The recovery was expected to take up to 4 months but with the help of my wife Madhu and colleagues, I managed to make full recovery & return to work.[/p][p]On Saturday 15 August I am planning to hike to the summit of Snowdon(the highest mountain in Wales & England) along with my son Rohan and a number of colleagues to support the Critical Care Unit who cared for me.
