My story

[p]This year I will be competing in my 12th London Marathon, following my quickest marathon for 3 years in 2019. I am embarking on an impressive challenge of completing the marathon distance in under 3 hours, which will smash my personnel best by over 15 minutes. Sub 3 hours will give me a UK championship time and put me in a elite group of UK club athletes. I have been honoured to be given the only charity place for London Marathon by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust. As serviceman with the the Royal Air Force, the trust has a special place in my heart. They have done so much work over so many years to provide opportunities to not only members of the Royal Air Force but to the younger generation of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. These young people have been given the chance of 50 flying Scholarships every year, which take then up to solo qualifications. The trust has also given money to enable disabled people to fly with purpose built fully adaptive light aircraft and these individuals have also gone onto fly solo. [/p][p]I have had the chance over the last 21 years to see what work the trust does and more so than at their flag ship event the Royal International Air Tattoo. I have been one of many hundreds of volunteers working to help this show go ahead with thousands of pounds raised each year. Last year I had the chance to work alongside the team as a Charitable Trust Supervisor, this opened my eye's to all the work they do and how such a small team ( 2 people) accomplish each year with not much break. [/p][p]I just wanted to give something back and putting myself through a little bit of sweet, tears and pain would not even scratch the surface of the hard work put in by the team. I know running London Marathon would not be enough effort, so I will be competing a few more challenges before the big one. [/p][p][br][/p][p]On the 27th January I ran 5 Marathons in 5 Days in aid of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust. Each day will began at 0800 starting RAF High Wycombe SHQ to RAF Halton and back again. I passed through the towns of Princess Risborough and Wendover on this 26.2 mile route each day, with a total of 131 miles ran over the 5 days. Then the following Monday I began a 16 week advanced training plan for the 2020 London Marathon.[/p][p]Unfortunately this was not to happen as following a very successful Milton Keynes Half Marathon, where for the first 4 miles I was with the leading pack. Covid hit, the following day it was announced that the first lockdown was to begin and bang went the April race. [/p][p]After a the frustrating 14 months it was finally announced that the delayed 2020 Marathon was to now take place on the 3rd October 2021. Training has now began, with pre race preparations taking place. All races have and are going to plan, I ran a steady 10K in Gloucester on the 4th July which was the first race in 16 months. A flat fast 5K has followed along with a steady build up in training to reach my target time of sub 3hr's and a PB by more than 15 mins over the marathon distance. [/p][p]In the run up to this years race and alongside my training I will take part in the Air tattoo Virtual 50 Challenge, which is either 50 Kilometres/Miles which will also span the over the London event. I intend to not only complete this but keep a log count of how many times I complete this, I will aim to complete this virtual 50 as many times as possible. The final 26.2 miles will commence on race day starting at Blackheath and finishing in the Mall. [/p][p]https://www.airtattoo.com/news/2021/jul/16/air-tattoo-50-challenge[/p][p]Once London Marathon has finished my fundraising for the Trust will not be fully complete. I am in the planning stages for a 24hr endurance event set over a marked out course in the confines of RAF Cosford, this challenge will require me to to mobile for a complete 24hrs by means of walk/jog/run. This event is being planned for April 2022, further updates will follow once London Marathon is over. [/p][p][br][/p][p]My final challenge will be an epic one, well it is epic for me. I will cycle from the first Charitable Trust air show of the year at RAF Cosford to the flag ship air show at RAF Fairford. Once I arrive outside ATC Tower/Show HQ, I will then run 13.1 miles (Half Marathon) on a route that will incorporate the entire show ground site, as a final thank you to the trust for giving me the opportunity to run London Marathon again. Once I cross the finish line, I will don my volunteers shirt and continue my work with the trust for 2022 Air Tattoo. [/p]
