Team story

[p]Nyabihu Update May 2018[/p][p]Building Update and New Challenge to raise the funds for Teacher Training![/p][p]Thank you SO much. You have raised over an amazing £17,000! ALSO because of a generous donation made to Chance for Childhood, the British Charity now working with Nyabihu Demonstration Center for the Deaf in Rwanda, the amount of money needed to build the new school and living centre for 120 deaf children HAS BEEN RAISED![/p][p]The building has started, in fact it is nearly completed, and we hope that the Centre will be opening NEXT MONTH! [/p][p]The children will then have the use of clean, composting toilets, warm showers, and new dormitories with windows so that they can see to get dressed in the mornings! There will be space to play and new, purpose built classrooms and offices. There will be workrooms for the vocational subjects, a computer room and a small library. At last these children may begin to feel that they are valued, that someone thinks they or worth making an effort for. That they are not relegated to a heap of buildings that are not fit for habitation.[/p][p]The buildings have overhanging roofs giving shade from the sun, and you can probably see the circular base for one of the water tanks which will collect rain water from the roofs. This will really help with reducing utility bills.[/p][p]Next Steps[/p][p]However, we are not going to stop there! The next fundraising effort, is more modest, but very important. [/p][p]Teacher Training[/p][p]Some of the teachers at the Centre have only the minimum of qualifications required by the Government. They are now experienced teachers, are fluent in Rwandan sign language and doing a great job, but they do not have a recognised Teaching qualification. We would like to sponsor two teachers so that they can go to college, at the weekends and during their holidays, for the two year part-time teaching course. We estimate that it will cost £1000 per student, for the two year course, including the travel costs to get them their, and the necessary books etc.[/p][p]So we are looking to raise about £1000 per year for two students to study. There are six teachers at present, who require this training, so if we can raise more, then they can all be trained quicker![/p][p]Here you can see a picture of Happiness and her mother. Happiness was born deaf and started to go to Louis' school. She is bright and learnt quickly. Her mother Mukansanga Valantine wanted to help, and started as a volunteer at the school. Valantine learnt quickly and is now working as a teacher though she does not have the required qualification. She would be one of the new students![/p][p]Update May 2018 Isobel Blakeley[/p][p][br][/p]
