Team story

[p]A team of Surgeons, Nurses, Physiotherapist and colleagues from Industry are aiming to raise money to support the NOTAA Implants for Malawi Project by Biking, Climbing, Hiking and Canoing across Cumbria from Whitehaven to Pooley Bridge.[/p][p]The Implants for Malawi project has been providing low cost Indian manufactured implants to treat poor injured patients in Malawi. Without this project the patients could not be treated, and new surgeons could not be trained.[/p][p]Even small donations make a huge difference to patients lives. 100% of the money raise will be used to purchase and ship implants to Malawi to treat patients. We purchase low cost, but very effective implants from India. This means the money raise will go a long way.[/p][p]The following statement is from Dr Bates, Orthopaedic Surgeon in Blantyre, Malawi: "Since 2013 we have been assisted by what was initially the Implant Fund and is now the Northwest Orthopaedic Trauma Alliance for Africa. Essentially they buy our implants for us so that we can continue to provide appropriate surgical care for our orthopaedic trauma patients, fixing fractures so that patients heal well and can get back to their daily lives and livelihoods. It is hard to describe the gratitude of patients who manage to regain their function after injury. Many of them didn’t expect to be helped in such a way and assume that their useful lives were over. We probably operate on around 500 patients a year at the moment and hope that this will increase as our theatre facilities expand.[/p][p]In addition the ability to carry out implant surgery allows us to have a training environment where we can train local orthopaedic specialists who will continue to provide the service in the future. In the last year 2 have qualified and there are 5 more in the pipeline.[/p][p]It is no exaggeration to say that the support from NOTAA has transformed the care that our orthopaedic trauma patients in Queens receive as well the training environment in Malawi’s main teaching hospital"[/p][p]Thank you for your support:[/p][p]Ashtin Doorgakant, Asim Rajpura, Ben Coupe, Carrie Wilkie, Craig Nuttall, Henry Wynn Jones, James Davenport, Jo Pasaolito, Jo Clarke, Justin Leong, Kieran Goode, Luke Critchley, Nikhil Shah, Paul Clements, Paddy Leatherbarrow, Sam Jain, Sean McAfee, Sunil Panchani, Tim Board.[/p][p]We are grateful to the League of Friends of Wrightington Hospital who have generously supported this project for several years. All of the money raised through this challenge will go to directly purchase and ship implants to Malawi.[/p]
