Team story

[p]At National Star we believe music should be inclusive. National Star is a charity which helps young people with complex disabilities achieve their goals. [/p][p] Like other UK charities, National Star's fundraising has been badly affected by the COVID-19 crisis and many of our fundraising events have had to be cancelled.[/p][p] Our National Star community is now far flung with many students shielding at home. What better way to lift our spirits and stay connected – and raise some vital funds of course – than to make music – with homemade percussion, or “percushion”, instruments.[/p][p] We are delighted that Dame Evelyn Glennie, the world’s premier solo percussionist, is also taking part and making her own percushion instrument. Performing worldwide with the greatest orchestras, conductors and artists, Dame Evelyn’s solo recordings, which now exceed 30 CDs, are as diverse as her career on-stage. A double GRAMMY award winner and BAFTA nominee Dame Evelyn is a composer for film, television and music library companies. [/p][p] Be a part of the Percushion wave[/p][p]We want you to help us make a joyful noise and make your own percushion instrument. It’s easy and starts with a cushion cover – or a duvet if you want to make a truly big noise. Then fill it with whatever you can find during lockdown to make music. It’s a recycling project and a sensory project in one![/p][p] You can use bottle tops (metal and plastic), plastic bottles, plastic packaging, scrunched up paper, foil, coins, marbles, gravel from the driveway. The only limit is your imagination. Best thing to do is grab a cushion cover and experiment with different objects, be daring, be creative – mix and match to see and feel how it sounds. You can add to the percushion sound with homemade shakers too![/p][p] Once you have created your percushion, then send us a video of you playing it for 2 minutes 6 seconds. We need your videos by May 18. Send them to msweet@nationalstar.org. Videos can be recorded on your phone – please shoot them as landscape.[/p][p] We will edit it together and premiere our 2 min 6 sec Percushion Wave on 26 May at 6.26pm. [/p][p] So here’s your chance to perform with Dame Evelyn Glennie and help National Star raise much needed funds to ensure we can enable young people with complex disabilities to reach their potential.
