My story

[p]Thanks for visiting my fundraising page and for taking the time to find out about tinnitus and the important work done by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA).[/p][p][br][/p][p]So why am I running the Virtual London Marathon and fund-raising for the BTA? Allow me to explain.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Combining Personal and Professional Passions[/p][p]I never expected that I could be a runner. However, I accidentally became one about 4 years ago and it quickly became a passion. I have run several distances but this will be the first time running a proper marathon.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Throughout my professional career, I have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with noise cancellation technologies, active and passive. Improving passenger comfort in aircraft, safety-critical military communications, reducing the risk of occupational Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (and hearing issues such as tinnitus) for Industrial workers and more recently, helping musicians and music-lovers enjoy their passion (while staying safe). It is through my work with Minuendo that I first discovered the BTA.[/p][p][br][/p][p]It seemed rather perfect to combine my passion for running and hearing protection, to raise awareness (and funds) for the fantastic BTA.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Tinnitus is horrible, for some it’s devastating.[/p][p]Tinnitus is not recognised as an illness or disease – that should change![/p][p] [/p][p]It is often thought of as ‘ringing in your ears’ but it can sound quite different for those that suffer. Ringing, hissing, humming, whooshing and buzzing in one or both ears; somewhere in your head. For some it is intermittent, others it is continuous - with no escape.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Sometimes, it sounds so loud it interferes with your ability to concentrate and hear things around you. It gets worse and more noticeable the quieter the environment, especially at bedtime.[/p][p][br][/p][p]It is estimated that 1 in 8 adults in the UK have permanent tinnitus, not just us older folks, more and more younger people are experiencing tinnitus. This is going to dramatical increase over the coming years – listening habits with headphones or earbud connected to audio devices is a big driver.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Half of the people living with tinnitus classify it as moderately or severely distressing, they describe it as intrusive, bringing emotional stress, insomnia, fatigue, memory problems, anxiety and headaches. Put simply it is debilitating![/p][p][br][/p][p]The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) [/p][p]The BTA is the only national charity specialising in tinnitus support. They fund research into finding a cure and they help people; know what it is, how to prevent it and how to manage it.[/p][p][br][/p][p]They support individuals through a confidential helpline, a network of UK support groups, they provide educational tools and online forums. A small team that gets a lot done![/p][p][br][/p][p]So rather than running just for me, I am doing it to raise awareness of this horrible condition and the outstanding work of the BTA.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thanks so much in advance for taking the time to read this and for any financial support that you can make – it is very much appreciated.[/p]

Neal Hill

Good luck Neal, I equally share your passion for preventing hearing loss and I know how debilitating tinnitus can be (my late Mum was lifelong sufferer).
