[p]Nick's Run Postponed to May 2021[/p][p]My name in Nick Ashill. I lost my mum to the lung disease known as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in 2015. Over 5000 people lose their battle with IPF every year in the UK. In the United States the number is 17000. Having been an endurance runner for many years I made the decision in late 2015 to run across the United States of America to raise awareness of the disease. I wanted to use the run to push myself physically and mentally and raise money for the UK charity Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust (PFT). [/p][p]On 14 May 2017 I left Los Angeles with the objective of running over 5400km to New York. I ran through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and half way through Ohio. On 2 August, after running 4000km, I was deliberately hit at 50mph by a pickup truck on US Highway 40. The driver did not stop and left me in a ditch with horrific injuries to my legs and pelvis as well as internal injuries. I was found 55 minutes by State Troopers and was flown by air ambulance helicopter to Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus where surgeons worked tirelessly to save my life. They did!! I spent the next 4 months in hospital. [/p][p]15 surgeries later I will be returning to the US at the end of May 2020 to finish my run. I will start on 27 May 2020 at the exact same spot I was hit and finish in New York about 3 weeks later. My dream to run across the US is still very much alive as is my quest to raise awareness of Pulmonary Fibrosis. [/p][p]If you are able to donate using my fundraising page, THANK YOU! All of the funds raised will go direct to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust to support individuals and their families living with the lung disease.
